ABSRACT In the early 1990s, the use of mobile phones generated a system of payment which could enable users of mobile devices effect payments for their transactions. This system- the Mobile Payment System (MPS) - has given rise to a lot of innovations over the years.

A Mobile Payment System is a type of payment transaction processing within an electronic procedure in the course of which (at least) the payer employs mobile communication techniques in conjunction with mobile devices to initiate, authorize or realize payments made for physical or digital goods or services. Payments are either effected by mobile phones or near field communication devices with mobile network operators, banks and businesses as the major players in the system.

MPS began operating in Ghana in 2006 with eTranzact, txtnpay, MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money and Tigo Cash. Despite its main advantage which imperatively is convenience, a very small fraction of the numerous mobile phone users in the nation have extensively accepted the system. Beyond this and additional advantages the system is facing a lot of challenges which have made it very difficult for it to be widely functional in the system and utilized by the masses.

The purpose of this project is to combine various research methods in the form of interviews, secondary data collection, observations and case studies to investigate the challenges that militate against the full acceptance and functionality of MPS in Ghana and as a result propose new strategies as relevant solutions that can be adopted to address these problems and transform MPS in the Ghanaian market.

    This report describes the Business model developed by African Communications Group (ACG) in Tanzania during the mid‐1990s, based on an analysis of the customers (WHO), the product offered (WHAT) and the ways used to get the market (HOW). Finally, the strategies and tactics adopted by the company are presented, showing how these tree elements converge in the same direction. By 1992, ACG bet for Tanzania, mainly because ACG was a young American company trying to develop a new market and this country doesn’t call the attention of the large telecom players. Tanzania had the highest backlog in Africa for telephone service, which was delivered by the State. With less than 80,000 telephone lines for a population of 27 million, the ratio of phones per person in the capital was around 1/100 and in rural areas 1/2,000. With an economy based on agriculture in rural areas, the main consumers of telephone services were the business people, who had to pay excessive fares. Even though the country presents several difficulties, the opportunity to develop a new platform of telecom services was interesting considering that by 1995, the demand for telephone services was 500,000 and the main public locations didn’t have phones. Furthermore, the demand for international calls (tourists, expatriates, business travellers) was considerable and unsatisfied. In addition, for other services as paging, ACG anticipated a base of 10,000 subscribers.     In 2011, sixty-five percent of India’s population did not have access to a bank account (Global Findex 2011). India has the second largest financially excluded poor in the world with more than half of its population considered as financially underserved At the same time, India is one of the fastest growing markets for mobile phones. Given the rising mobile phone usage in the country, mobile banking (also known as M-Banking) has a great potential for enabling financial inclusion of the poor. India has attained near universal telecom access with one of the lowest–cost retail distribution networks. Among the myriad M-banking services currently underway, EKO’s Simplibank offers one of the most promising initiatives in mobile money operating on a low-cost banking platform. Launched in 2007 through a partnership between the financial services startup company EKO and the State Bank of India (SBI), this mobile money service initially operated as a pilot project in the cities of Delhi, Bihar and Jharkhand. By 2011, EKO had captured a wider consumer base as a business correspondent of SBI through its new product for domestic remittances. EKO partners with a network of agents—chemists, grocers, airtime vendors—to provide banking services to people with no access to formal bank accounts. This paper explores the everyday use and effects of EKO mobile banking. It discusses findings from a recently concluded study of 160 customers, 20 customer service points (CSPs)/agents, and key functionaries of EKO in Delhi. The research asks the following questions: What is the socio-economic impact of EKO’s mobile money accounts on the savings behaviour of low income target users?
