Introduction:

Geo strategic means the importance of a country or a region as by virtue of its geographical location.

In August 1947, when Pakistan emerged on the world’s map as an independent state, it was just like a baby in hospital who can hardly survive due to its fragile economy and extremely vulnerable defense. However it has been able to survive and make some progress despite of numerous setbacks and crises. Perhaps the most important factors due to which it survived are its strategic geographical position and its particular Ideology.

Pakistan is situated at a domain which has large Governmental , Profitable and strategic position. It has seen interference from great powers i-e Britain, USSR, USA. Its importance was further raised in 1979, when US decided to use Pakistan as Frontline state against their enemies and after the events of 9/11.

Because It lies near the Persian Gulf where 65% of the world’s oil is produced. That’s why, its significance is increased.

Nuclear power:

Pakistan is only Islamic country in the domain which has the Nuclear power. Due to this, It has great influence in political issues and sustaining the position in the domain.

Proximity of great forces:

Pakistan is located among great forces. Among its neighbors, world power Russia and the emerging world power Chine lies. On the other hand, India which is also Nuclear power and Afghanistan lies.

China is the upcoming superpower both in economic and military terms. In the times to come, it is likely to be the only rival of the US economically as well as militarily. It is evident that the US is strengthening India so that in the times to come, it may be helpful for it in any eventual confrontation with China. In this situation, China naturally seeks closer ties with Pakistan which is also opposed to the expansionist designs of India.

If we look towards Afghanistan, it is land locked country and due to this Afghanistan has to depend upon Pakistan for its trade and economy. And NATO troops are also well aware of that they can not win the battle without the help of Pakistan.

Iran also needs Pakistan’s help against the western conspiracies.

Importance due to transportation economy:

Afghanistan is a land locked country and it depend upon Pakistan for its trade and economy. On the other hand, China is the fastest growing and developing country in the world but it also depend upon Pakistan for its trade such as Gwader port and Karakoram highway.

The coastal belt of Balochistan can provide outlet to china’s western provinces to have access to middles eastern markets with the development of coastal highways and motorways.

Great importance in Islamic countries:

If we look at the map of Muslim countries, Pakistan occupies a central location. Towards west of Iran, china extends to North Africa. Thus it can actively participate in the activities of Muslim world-economic development, transport of resources and above all combat terrorism.
