Genocide
What does genocide mean? The “era of mass murder” might be given as a name for the 20th century. Never in the history of the world have so many millions of people been deliberately killed since 1900. These millions weren't all because of war. They were victims of genocide: the deliberate killings of racial, religious, ethnic, or political groups. Genocide against humanity. We should do more to stop genocide.
The movie Hotel Rwanda is based on true events that took place during the genocidal violence that erupted in Rwanda between the Hutu and Tutsi groups in 1994, when the Hutu military and Interahamwe militias killed roughly 800,000 Tutsis over approximately 100 days. This movie portrays a man, Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of the hotel Mille Collines in the capital city of Kigali, uses his political position, social skills, and quick wit to rescue thousands of lives from a holocaust. Hotel Rwanda is a stunning testimony to the power of just one individual. It defines how a person, using cunning and courage, changes the course of history.
However, during that terrible time, the western world did nothing. The Rwanda authorities justly reprove the United Nations (UN) and its Security Council for taking no action in the face of what was happening in 1994:
According to Canadian General Dallaire, who commanded the contingent of UN troops at that time, he suggested to UN top officials back in November of 1993 that the caches of weapons discovered in various part of the county be neutralized which could have prevented the nightmare scenario, but the answer from New York directed him to refrain from such action. There was active UN involvement during the next stage with the rest of the world virtually just looking on as the scale of mass murders in Rwanda was growing. (Pierce 43)
Throughout history of humankind, genocide never stopped. Since... [continues]
