Genetic Engineering; the Blueprint of Life
Since the beginning of time, people have been improving their race through technology; yet none of the other advancements have enhanced the technology as much as genetic engineering did for the 21 century. A technology that alters, splices, duplicates, and manipulates genes... the science of genetic engineering. Even though it is an astonishing achievement, there are multiple flaws that prevent it from proceeding into society. What is frightening about genetic engineering; the thought to cure common problems, the power to end mankind, or the simple mystery behind how it works?
It all started back in 2500 BC when people decided to start selectively breeding horses, although the evolution from the past to present is significant. Now with the current technology, genetic engineers have the ability to alter the DNA of a cell for purposes of research, as a mean of manufacturing animal proteins, correcting genetic defects, or making improvements to plants, animals, and humans. Breeding horses scrupulously was the first step towards what is now known as genetic engineering; the next major milestone in the history of genetics was in 1866 when Gregor Mendel reported his findings on the pea plants, showing the patterns of genetic inheritance. As scientists became more interested in genetics the farther and faster it progressed; leading to the human genome project in 1984, and Dolly the sheep- the first cloned mammal- in 1996.
Some find the work of genetic engineering incredible, because it can prevent hereditary diseases, lower cost of food, health and taste of foods can be maximized, can clone a loved one or pet, and have a designer baby. Craig Helm also thinks “…It would be generally positive. As the world population is growing to staggeringly large numbers, we will need to take advantage of this and other sciences to solve the problems or challenges that we will be facing in the future.”
