Generation Y : Changing the World

Generation is the entire body of individuals born and living at about the same time and also can be defined as a group of individual, most of whom are the same approximate age, having similar ideas, problems, attitude and a group of individual belonging to a specific category at the same time. Each generation has its own characteristics and set of value. Different generation have different values and beliefs toward family, career, work or life balance, loyalty, gender roles, purchasing power, working environment and else. Generations are categorized into Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y, Generation Z and the latest generation that came out by researcher Mark McCrindle is Generation α (ALPHA). Baby Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964 or is a person who was born during the demographic Post-World War II baby boom. In easy way baby boomer refer to our grandparents or parents who were born between these years. In this generation, job status and social standing are most important because they more optimistic, ambitious and loyal. They also believe employment is for their life and the company. In their youth baby boomers were open minded and rebellious but became more conservative in their 30’s and 40’s. They created the concept of “workaholic” and “superwoman” which are refer to the person who love their work very much and strong women who can stand alone. Baby boomer sometimes divided by two subgroups as life experience, attitudes, behavior, and society were very different in 1964 compared to 1946: * Boomers I or The Baby boomers, born 1946 to 1954, came of age 1963 to 1972 * Boomers II or Generation Jones, born 1955 to 1964, came of age 1973 to 1983 Generation X was born between 1965 and 1979. Generation X also called Baby-Busters or ME generation. They are well educated generation and have many tertiary qualifications and also as the last generation that can apply job without any high education level. They tend to be more individualistic, self reliant and skeptical of authority. Unlike baby boomers they are not interested in long term careers, corporate loyalty or status symbols. In the workplace they focus on relationship, outcomes, their rights and skills. The early technologies like computer also begin at this generation because of that many intelligence people come from this generation. Generation Y was born between 1980 and 1995 and also known as the Millennium or Net Generation. Millennial are very technology savvy and are comfortable with ethnically diverse group. Generation Y are more optimistic, confident, sociable, have strong morals and sense of civic duty. The lifestyle of this generation is mainly being influence by current issue, the rapid growth of internet and friends’ recommendation. These factors have led Generation Y to be more flexible and always change in taste and preference. They are also very modern in communication and have a good relationship with friends due to the expert in using the communication mediums like telephone, social networking like Facebook, Twitter, Skype and more. In the workplace they expect great environment and flexibility in working. Generation Y tend to change their job frequently if they felt bored and not suitable with them. Generation Z was born after 1995. This generation was born and grows with technology and social media around them, and because of that they spend their time more on online communication like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Skype and else. They are also known as Digital Natives that are used to instant action and satisfaction due to the rapid internet technology and growth. They usually came from parents of Generation X and born into smaller families. Since majority of them are still young, their life are revolved around entertainment and joy and less likely to be interested in current issues.
