General Mills was ranked #58 on Fortune’s 2011 100 Best Companies to Work For, after being previously ranked at #90. To date, the organization has been featured on FORTUNE’s 100 Best Companies list in 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2000, and 1998. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the cereal and yogurt maker reported revenue of $14.6 million in 2010 and a profit of $1.3 million. Their workforce operates 24 hours per day, 365 days each year. They are the sixth-largest food company in the world. Their famous brands include: Cheerios, Total, Chex, Lucky Charms, Kix, Yoplait, Betty Crocker, Old El Paso, Bisquick, Gardettos, Hamburger Helper, Pillsbury, Fiber One, Nature Valley, Fruit Roll-up, Fruit By The Fruit, Green Giant, Progresso Soup, and Haagen-Dazs. Their biggest competitors are respectively Kellogg, Quaker, and Post. They produce their products in 17 countries and sell them in more than 130 countries worldwide. With operations around the world, the company boasts 16,808 employees in the United States and 16,465 employees outside the US – and nearly 2,500 employees have been with the organization for more than 25 years! Even more impressive is the fact that the company experienced a only 2% voluntary employee turnover in 2010, indicating impressive employee satisfaction and loyalty. Its employee base is diverse, having 19% minorities and 40% of their overall labor force is women. Exceptionally forward thinking in their approach to employee incentives, General Mills provides impressive benefits to their employees. They offer competitive salaries and annual bonuses (based on performance and company performance) – and they review salaries annually. In addition, all new employees join the company with three weeks vacation annually, and their vacation allotment increases with tenure. Moreover, medical and dental benefits begin on the first day of employment for all employees. They offer retirement and savings plans, education assistance, stock options, and a General Mills Federal Credit Union. Other special perks include parenting and adoption benefits along with life, auto, and home insurance options. The company also offers domestic partner benefits for same-sex couples. General Mills also promotes a healthy work/life balance for its employees. Telecommuting, job sharing, flexible scheduling around core business hours, summer hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and compressed workweeks (optional longer work days Monday through Thursday and half days on Fridays) are just a few of their trendy practices that demonstrate their commitment to this cause. The company is also concerned about their employees’ physical fitness. They subsidize gym memberships for employees and often have fitness centers onsite. The perks don’t stop there. They also offer paid sabbaticals and onsite childcare. It is also interesting to note that employees are offered the option of working part-time for up to eight weeks when returning from a leave of absence, including personal leaves, emergency military leave, and educational leaves. Also, employees may take additional unpaid vacation days without penalty. Their employees are known for citing flexibility as one of the most important factors in their decision to join and stay with the organization. In fact, a recent article in ComputerWorld Magazine stated that “in a recent internal survey, 61% of IT employees said work flexibility was an important factor in their decision to join General Mills, and 88% said it's been an important factor in their decision to stay.” The company ‘s leadership also encourages employee recognition.
