Introduction: So hello all my fellow classmates and Miss May. The song I am going to talk about is How To Save A Life by The Fray. For now, I will talk a little bit about the scenes of the video to help you all understand it better but the main thing of this song is the story of how it came about. So, as we all can see in the Music Video, it starts off with the scene of the band and along the video, lots of other kids whom I can say are pre-adolescents to adolescents are introduced. If we all notice carefully, all the children look depressed and this can be seen from the scenes of them crying and shouting in the Music Video. Also, at random parts of the video, there were encouraging phrases and words shown that are supposed to help them get through the tough period of time and of course, at the last part of the song is when all the children finally getting out of depression as they were all seen smiling genuinely and not being in agony anymore. And if you all did take note, the last word that appeared in the Music Video is ‘Say goodbye’.

Backstory: Okay so there is actually a little story behind this meaningful song. Isaac Slade, the lead singer of the band attended a camp for troubled teens and he was a mentor there. At the camp, Slade met a boy who was dealing with a drug problem. This song is talking about all the people who tried to reach out to the boy but was unsuccessful. The people around the boy only knew how to say things like, “Quit taking drugs and cutting yourself or I won’t talk to you again.” The boy was losing his friends and was dealing with depression and they just didn’t realize that what the boy needed was a listening ear and a lot of moral support.

Perspectives: Well, this is written based on a first-hand experience by Slade, it actually makes this song very intimate and personal.

Messaging: In my opinion, I think it appeals mainly to the heart as this was a camp for troubled teens meaning that the boy Slade met was probably just

If we assimilate the life as a huge river with rogue, endless waves, then some of us are standing on the steady, vast main land, some of us tried to enter the river and were dashed back to the main land by the waves later, some of us are still struggling to swim across the river, fighting the surge with our own strength, and only little of us has successfully swum across it, standing on the other shore, where others who have not ever been to there can tell nothing about.…

. This song is about someone having to live up to the expectations someone else wants for them. They are pressured into having to be exactly like that person. They are nonstop always being smothered, and absolutely hate the fact that they cannot be who they want to be. They eventually get tired of listening to him/her and start living to their own expectations.…

Besides, this song is very inspirational. To me, this song teaches me about living and the moment and learning from my mistakes. It teaches me that I can't let things in the past hold me back, everyday is a new beginning. Also, it is okay if I don't know what it is I want to do with the rest of my life. Sometimes that is even better because it lets me have new experiences until I find something that is perfect because it is what I want for myself, not what anyone else does.…

The instruments work together to make a set of beats which complements the mood of the song. In the lyrics “I'm too depressed to go on/ You'll be sorry when I'm gone”, you are told that this person is depressed and does not want to live anymore. As the song continues, you get the idea that this person just wants to be alone. This is shown in the lyrics “I couldn't wait till I got home/ To pass the time in my room alone”. Although this may sound bad, it gives a sense of hope because the person is choosing to spend time alone rather than committing suicide. I feel that this song is important because it shows how a person struggling with suicide and depression feels. I have known many people who have struggled with depression and although I do not know exactly what they are feeling, I can get somewhat of an idea. The lyrics “The tour was over, we'd survived” put in a little of the bands spin on this whole idea of being depressed. What I interpreted from these lyrics is that they all have a hard time on tour because they never can see their family…

The verses in between the chorus’ are all about being yourself and saying who cares what everyone else does just be yourself. Although the whole song is powerful three parts really stand out. The first is “Stepped out of the line, like a sheep runs from the herd.” This is basically saying that although it is uncommon for a sheep to run away from its herd or in this case people to leave behind what others are doing and do their own thing and stand up for what they believe in, it does happen and they are being that lone sheep and leaving ‘the herd’ to do whatever they want, whenever they want and you can too. The second is extremely meaningful, it goes “One light, one mind, flashing in the dark, blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts.” This means that while some people do stand up against everyone else a lot of the time they are quickly ‘blinded’ by what everyone else is doing and forget what they were standing up for in the first place. The final part that sticks out to me is “For crying out loud, she screams unto me. A free for all, fuck ‘em all,…

This song was released in the 90’s. Initially this song was created with the thought of honoring all friends and family lost during life’s journey. I believe it was also partially inspired by the AIDs epidemic that was prevalent at the time. I think when dealing with death, this is a good song to help reassure us that we might not have been able to do and say all the things we wished we had before the passing of a loved one, but someday we’ll all be in the same place and eventually, hopefully, see each other…

“Yeah, it's a harsh realm, don't abandon me.” The “harsh” realm being the world around us, and how extremely difficult it is to get through this life alone. He states to everyone in his life “don't abandon me.” After losing almost all of my close friends, not being close with my family, and going through an awful breakup with my girlfriend of 3 years, I have felt alone. This song brings me to tears anytime I try to perform it for people. I can't get past the chorus, because I really want people to know I mean it when I say don't abandon me. Though it feels like they already have. I see familiar faces in the crowd and they don't really listen, just watch. The world is such a tough place for anyone, but feeling alone while you go through everything bad, makes it so much…

What I would call the bridge of the song is expressing that some people say that what you do and how hard you work for it automatically determines the outcome of life. He think it’s just going to happen like it happens and there is nothing they can to do change them. That people will always have demons inside themselves, that demons are a part of him. He needs to let people go when they are innocent; he doesn’t want to ruin that. But he needs help! The line “I can’t escape this now, unless you show me how” Shows he needs help; it’s a note of hope. He needs help from people to be able to show him the way out. "Your eyes they shine so bright, I want to save that light”…

What if I'm missing out? What if there's a greater purpose I could be living right now?” This being the most repetitive theme in the song struck a chord with me, especially emotionally. With these three questions, I was really forced to ask myself what I was doing to help people in the world. Although I contribute to school drives and community fundraisers, do I try to do more? Do I find other ways to help those in unfortunate situations? Or do I just think that what I do is enough? In one of the first verses of the song, the lyrics even state, “I throw a twenty in the plate but I never give 'til it hurts.” There is so much more I could be doing at the moment to help people in the world. Instead, I just leave everything to others. This isn’t what God intended. He wants us to give all that we can to help those in need. Through this song, I can see that I can’t just sit in my “perfect world” and believe that everything is right with the world. I need to take action and do my best to make the world I have a happy one, another reason why this song is important to…

Life has its ups and downs—recently I've been generally happy, but in the past... not so much. Music has helped me through a lot of times I thought I'd never get through. The song I picked, Talking Sh-t About A Pretty Sunset, is one of those helpful songs. A lot of Modest Mouse songs deal with depression, a heavy topic, but they have a way of describing it so that it just makes sense to anyone who's gone through, or is going through, similar struggles. The lyrics can make a listener feel less alone—they feel understood because they are.…

Why is this happening? Why were you the chosen one? And I used to believe that this was never goanna happen. But now I see it did” is the song’s lead. It tells you about how you never imagine someone you love and care about having a really severe and fatal illness. This verse represents the beginning of the journey when no one could understand that something so terrible could happen to someone so close to us and no one knew why it had to happen to him. The song continues with “And I bet it must be hard. And I know that you are strong. And you will stand up when you fall.” It’s a representation of the author having a conversation with Faike on how he inspires us and how proud we are of him because we all know his strength. Also, makes us realize that he is not a quitter and how he can fight to be in the top.…
