What does Pollitt believe to be the most basic reason why people object to same-sex marriage?…

Ask just about anyone they’ll all say they’re in favor of equal rights for gays. Just name the topic- should gay people have the same rights in housing, jobs, should they have equal access to government benefits or equal protection under the law? Then you get to the topic of gay marriage- that’s when all the talk of equality stops dead cold. If two people love each other, no matter what their gender, ethnic back round, or religious values are, they should be able to get married. The law doesn’t discriminate against a white and black person getting married, or a Catholic and Jewish person, so why not two gay people. Unfortunately Proposition 8 passes-which now means that gay marriage in California is not recognized. Not allowing gay people to get married is like saying they have no rights, or they don’t matter. Gays should be able to marry because it’s their constitutional rights as human beings.…
At a time where a procedural republic is present, gay marriage is an issue that does not satisfy the ideal of liberty as self-choosing and unencumbered. However, this concern has become one of the most controversial subjects today because it violates the first amendment, which is the right of the people to peaceably assemble. How are homosexuals supposed to assemble for their cause if they are threatened with violence? Homosexuality is the real problem in the eyes of many and anything relating to this topic is immediately cast down. Because homosexuals are a minority, their rights cannot be advocated because their lifestyle is not part of the dominant culture. The government is supposed to bracket morality issues and remain objective on topics like gay marriage, but for some reason this is not happening. Administrations are able to get away with using their religious and moral backgrounds to set certain laws in place, remaining unjust. The issue of gay marriage is not homosexuality in itself but an individual 's right to choose whom they want to marry.…
A very big topic that lingers on the hearts and minds of so many Americans today, on the desks of so many politicians and in so many courtrooms around the country today is gay marriage. There are two very identifiable sides to this debate and both sides have very defendable points of view, which are constantly being publically expressed by radicals and extremist from both sides of the spectrum. My point of views differ from those who believe that gay marriage should remain illegal however, I am going to look at both sides of this huge debate and argue the point that homosexuals should be granted the right to marry whomever they please because it is not only unconstitutional, but unjust and logically improper to forfeit to this group of people the same, equal rights to marriage as heterosexuals simply because of their sexual orientation.…
Eric Zorn’s newspaper article, “Change of Subject: The Top Six Arguments against Gay Marriage”, tells about six popular arguments against gay marriage, and explains how he believes each is not valid. Zorn wrote this article to persuade opponents of same sex marriage to agree that it should be legalized, and he informs about changes in our society and why he believes gay marriage should be one of these changes. Zorn is trying to tell how over time we have created and destroyed traditions and that gay marriage should be legal because it is harmless to society contrary to popular beliefs that it could lead to legalizing polygamy or that homosexuals have immoral behavior. The author’s bias is shown in this article to be pro same sex marriage because he believes it is not morally wrong because it does not harm anyone. Zorn also states in the introduction, “I 've been informally debating opponents of legalizing same-sex marriage for nearly 20 years…” (Zorn).…
No one likes to be told what he or she can or cannot do. Parents do it to protect their children; bosses do it to direct people with their jobs. However, why are some people so focused and driven to control others they don't even know? People who oppose gay marriages fit into this category.…

The issue of gay marriage has been a long-standing issue that has plagued our society worldwide. With the same fire as ethnic equality issues brought during the civil rights movement, gay marriage has brought similar attitudes our of current generations. Opponents of gay marriage claim that it would destroy the foundation and meaning of traditional marriage and family and that it would lead to polygamy and a growth in sexually transmitted disease. I believe that gay marriage is a right that should be afforded to all individuals, as it would help the local and state governments, change traditional family values for the better, and for the mere fact that it is a right protected and often overlooked by the constitution.…
Legally, the states within the United States have always had jurisdiction over marriage laws, but surprisingly, many of the states had never defined marriage to be a union a man and a woman. It was only after some states began granting gays the right to marry that many other states decided to preemptively bar gay marriage by creating laws that define marriage to be a union between persons of the opposite gender. Even Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, which defined marriage as a legal union that is exclusively between one man and one woman.…
Katha Pollitt counters arguments against marriage between homosexuals in her essay “What’s Wrong with Gay Marriage?”. I think the main purpose of this essay was to convince the reader that there is absolutely nothing wrong with gay marriages. The author starts her essay with a question because she disagrees that gay marriage threatens the so-called institution of marriage. Pollitt jumps from one argument to another and looks at the institution of marriage from various perspectives, such as history, politics, society and religion. She wonders why so many people do not treat marriage seriously, and yet deny it to gays, showing hypocrisy. She gets very emotional in the defense of gay marriage in this piece. The author then informs the reader that she does not like marriage. She argues that marriage is “not about sex, it’s about separation of church and state”.…
The idea of gay marriage is what I would call a recent phenomenon. I say recent because it has only been in the past few years that activists in the country have become extremely vocal about legalizing gay marriage. What got the ball rolling was the first legally gay marriage in the United States which was performed in San Francisco in 2004 between Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon who are gay rights activists. After this first marriage the idea of homosexuals marrying became a trend that swept across the country. Many gay rights activists argue that it is the will and desire of the people in this country to legalize gay marriage. Ironically pro gay marriage legislation has failed to pass in all of the states where it has gone to a vote by the people and by a landslide margin at that. Why is it that so far the overwhelming majority of our country does not approve of having gay marriage legalized? Is it because our country is full of bigoted, gay bashing, homophobes? I would not say that this is the case at all. The reason the people of the United States are against legalizing gay marriage is because of the effect it would have on our morals.…
The gay community has been fighting for the right to marry for quite some time now and over the years I have heard a variety of different opinions on the issue. In the passage “Gay “Marriage”: Societal Suicide”, written by Charles Colson he argues against gay marriages. Colson states in the passage that allowing same sex marriages is like committing social suicide and gives many points to back up his claim. Colson feels that if society accepts gays getting married it will lead to a decline in family and an increase in crime and teen pregnancy amongst many other issues. If I would have to take a stance on the gay marriage issue I would have to side with Colson because he appeals to some of my beliefs in some but not all of his points in the passage. Even though I don’t believe in gay marriage it does feel like the story presents a very biased point of view. Colson gives many valid points in his reading but some of them seem to have no validity whatsoever.…
Gay marriage is a topic that is heavily debated in this day and age. Whether or not it should be legal for homosexuals to get married is a theme that authors Andrew Sullivan, who wrote “For Gay Marriage” and William J. Bennett, who wrote “Against Gay Marriage” use in there articles. The main points the authors both discus is the meaning of marriage itself, the social impact same sex marriage will have on society, and the influence on children and teens. Although, the authors have similar themes disused in their topics, there are more differences in how they view same sex marriage.…
Gay marriage has been the topic of discussion in recent years. It has been broadcast on news stations and printed in magazines all across America. Each publication has displayed a different point of view. Although marriage is a fundamental right under the constitution, same sex couples don 't have the ability to marry. Marriage is a private union not a political subject. In my opinion, any two people who love each other should be able to get married. Conflict theory helps to explain this problem the theory explains the pluralistic nature of society and the differential distribution of power among groups. Some groups use their power to create rules particularly laws to serve and promote their interest. That is what the government has been doing with the issue of gay marriage.…
