Gay Couple's Adoption

Somewhere in the world a child looses a parent every 2.2 seconds according to the NGO SOS Children's Villages Canada. UNICEF estimates that there are 143 million orphaned children living in the world today and as many as 100 million more children abandoned on the streets world wide, living in substandard and dangerous conditions. Out of this many children, The Boston Globe affirms 250,000 are adopted each year worldwide. 85% of the adoptions occur within the same country, this means only 1.5% of the orphan kids are adopted each year, leaving millions of children homeless. More concretely, in United States, according to the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System, on September 30, 1999, 127,000 children in the public child welfare system were waiting to be adopted. The median age of children in this group was 7.7 years, and many had spent more than 36 continuous months in foster care. That same year, 46,000 children were adopted from public child welfare agencies.
This percentage of adoption could increase significantly if homosexual couples were able to adopt in the same proportion heterosexual couples are. Should gay couples have the right of adopting these abandoned children or isn't this a normal situation for a kid to grow up in? In United States, there are states which permit this type of adoption just as heterosexual adoption, and there are other states that prohibit it alleging different issues. This debate started many years ago, and since then it has thrown to the public opinion many theories and explanations to discuss whether it is correct and viable or not.
  One of the states where gay people either single or married, can freely adopt a kid without any problems is California. Here, it is permitted single and couple adoption by gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender.
