A passionate, self-willed and persistent character yet an in-valid. Vincent Freeman, a character in Andrew Niccols film “Gattaca” achieves more, whilst being imperfect whereas the perfect not so much. Gattaca focuses on the perfection and the high expectations but not so many achieve as much as Vincent does. In the film, Anton Freeman, his younger brother has several rounds with him in the game ‘Chicken’ and Anton would win all the time, a sudden change occurs where Vincent comes out on top. Throughout the film a strong bond formally connects Irene and Vincent, although Vincent is the only in-valid to achieve, there are many perfectionists who achieve a lot also. The ‘Chicken’ game is a game that Vincent and his brother Anton played when they were young, where they would swim out into the sea and the person who gives up first would be the Chicken and thats where they got ‘The Chicken’ game from. Vincent lost most of the times, but when he decides to leave home because everyone around him and his family doubts him of achieving his dream, like when Vincent’s dad tells him “The only way you’re going to see the inside of a spaceship is if you were cleaning it.” This comment made by his father encourages and helps Vincent create a better self esteem because he didn’t care what people said about him anymore. Through-out the film Vincent and Anton meet again and have one more game of Chicken. In that last game of Chicken Vincent comes out on top again, Anton asks him “How have you done any of this?” and Vincent replies “You want to know how i did it?..... I never saved anything for the swim back.” It is that moment that Anton and Vincent discover the true instincts of Vincent. It is also clear that Vincent has achieved something he was not made to do. He also proves everyone wrong and especially his own family. The film Gattaca have a lot of relationships and bonds between characters like Jerome Morrow and Vincent Freeman, but there is one that shows a lot more...
