Gatsby: Mind and Daisy
Gatsby

______________________________

I was so nervous, I felt as if I was going to be sick. Daisy was special and I wanted to win her back, now that I had everything that she had wanted before. I could take care of her now. I had the biggest amount of gratitude towards Nick for doing this for me. If only he had known how deep this reconnection with Daisy meant to me. Nick didn’t know the little details that had been buried many years ago. I was wearing the best suit that I owned and my hair was slicked back in its usual way. The Scotch on the rocks I had to calm my nerves was sitting beside me on the dining table.
As I paced back and forth from one end of the table to the other, I started to have doubts that clouded my mind. What if Daisy wasn’t happy to see me? What if she didn’t even care about the things I could do for her? She might not even want to leave Tom, even though she knows he is cheating on her with another woman. It was the money
Tom had, of course, but I had more. I could treat Daisy better, kinder even. Not in a lifetime would I think to hurt Daisy the way Tom had done. How disrespectful to do to a woman. Perhaps I had gotten ready to early, but I was incredibly nervous and I had nothing else to do but sit and wait around for the time where I could be reunited with
Daisy once more.
This had to have been one of the most happiest days of my life, I just couldn’t believe that it was actually happening to me. Still, the doubts filled my mind as it pulled away any happiness I had about this occurrence. What if she didn’t even give me a second glance? What if she didn’t love me anymore? I mean, she had obviously

moved on to better things. I shook my head as if to physically get rid of these tormenting thoughts in my head. She will be happy to see me, I thought to myself. I decided to move to my living area where I could sit and relax before I headed over to
Nick’s house. As I took a seat in the large chair, I let out a breath of air that I hadn’t noticed I’d kept in. I was way more nervous than I had let myself out to be, this was so frightening, how scared I was to see Daisy for the first time in what felt like an eternity.
I pulled out the morning’s newspaper as a distraction from what was to come later on in the evening. Nothing was helping.
Finally, I stood up and tossed the newspaper. This was downright ridiculous. How could I be this nervous? It was just Daisy, for Christ’s sake! My once lover, who was taken away by that scoundrel, Tom. God, how his very name felt like poison on my tongue. Some man he thinks he is. Perhaps if Daisy were to know about this meeting, would she be just as nervous as I? Would she be pacing from room to room in her house, that I had bought her, just so I would know that she was there, right there every day. The anticipation I felt was a feeling unlike any other. This had better go well with Daisy, for if she didn’t want to see me, I wouldn’t know what to do. How I had gone this long without her, I will never be able to fathom. I once again cleared my mind and all the doubts and managed to convince myself that Daisy still loved me, and a small sliver of hope inside thought that maybe, just maybe, Daisy thought of me when I was too, thinking of her. This night was going to be magnificent, I could feel it.
Daisy was going to be happy to see me, and we were all going to have a grand time at
Nick’s place. Nothing was going to get in our way, not now. Nothing could, actually.

This was meant to be. Daisy was meant to be with me, not that dog, Tom. Daisy was mine, I wanted her, and I always get what I want. Nothing is going to stop me this time.

Daisy’s soon proves to not just be promiscuous, but also extremely careless. Gatsby even said, “She only married you because I was poor” (137). The fact that Daisy left Gatsby and married Tom just for his money shows that she is careless about Toms feelings and takes advantage of him for only his wealth. Even when Daisy and Gatsby get into a car accident and hit poor Myrtle. A couple days after this accident, Nick finds out that “she and tom had gone away early that afternoon, and taken baggage with them” (172). Daisy is obviously not concerned with the horrible thing she has done and takes off with her…

Daisy Buchanan is another character who has a habit of not being honest. This is demonstrated most clearly when Nick is inviting Daisy to his house for tea. Nick had instructed Daisy not to bring Tom, so she pretended not to know who he was when she said, “Who is ‘Tom’?” (83). Because Daisy was willing to lie about her whereabouts and forget about Tom, it is clear to see her dishonesty. Other people may question the secrecy, but Daisy does not care enough about her husband to include him. By willingly excluding Tom, Daisy is being dishonest.…

Daisy's first priority obviously wasn't her family. Throughout the entire account, Daisy's daughter was mentioned once. In chapter seven, we meet Daisy's daughter, who enters with a nanny. Both Daisy and Tom do not have a routine occupation, but they don't have the time to raise their own daughter. When Caroline and Nick discuss Tom and Myrtle's affair, Caroline states, "It's really his wife that's keeping them apart. She's a Catholic and they don't believe…

Neither one of them is happy in the relationship but instead maintain the image for others and their child. This can be exemplified by Tom's flaunting of his affair when he knows Daisy will do nothing to reprimand him. Furthermore the main reason Daisy married Tom, is because of his inherited wealth. We observe this when she lies crying on the floor before her wedding, clutching Gatsby's letter and Tom's necklace and instead of cancelling the wedding, she continues with it as if nothing had happened. In this instance we can see how shallow Daisy is, in that she sacrifices her own happiness and the love of Gatsby by marrying Tom for his money. As well as this we notice, in their relationship, the foolishness of Daisy. This can be identified in the "hulking" incident in which Daisy teases Tom. Thus Daisy can be described as silly, foolish and…

To go along with his arrogance, Tom Buchanan is also very unfaithful to his wife Daisy. Tom does nothing to hide this from Daisy and goes so far as to accept a phone call from his mistress in the middle of dinner. “Tom’s got some woman in New York” (19). Miss Baker abruptly brings this up while having a conversation with Nick. Not only does she somehow know, but now the word is spreading that Tom is cheating. Not only is Tom cheating, but he was mysteriously absent only an hour after his child was born. Daisy confides this to Nick while there sitting on the porch chatting; ‘“She was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where”’ (21). That coupled with his affair, proves that Tom is extremely unfaithful to his wife Daisy and thinks very little of…

I chose this passage because it shows how women were viewed during this period in the book. As I was reading this, I did not agree with the statement, “she’ll be a fool-that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world”. I believe that everyone is equal, and girls are intelligent and can do whatever they please. However, in the 1920’s, women were not viewed equal to men. Daisy’s remark shows that she did not agree with social values at the time, about women. Daisy stated this to Nick and Jordan when explaining her wishes for her child even though she is a girl…

Throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby, it was evident that Tom and Daisy had an unstable relationship. Both Tom and Daisy come from wealthy backgrounds and the upper echelon of society. Tom is a small man hiding in a big hose with an equally large ego. Daisy is a hospitable character who is forever in love with having a rich and lavish lifestyle. Though big, strong, and arrogant, Tom still shows that he cares a little bit for Daisy.…

The marriage of Tom and Daisy Buchanan seems menaced by a quiet desperation beneath its pleasant surface. Unlike Nick, Tom is arrogant and dishonest, advancing racist arguments at dinner and carrying on relatively public love affairs. Daisy, on the other hand, tries hard to be shallow, even going so far as to say she hopes her baby daughter will turn out to be a fool.…
