Gates Essay 1
Gates Essay 1 From an early age there have been three classes, which I could not wait to go to. These three classes are also the subjects in which I excel in which are English, History, and Mathematics. The reasons why I excel in these classes are because of my Grandma, utilizing my resources, and self motivation. Growing up in a house with an educator is a great thing. From an early age my Grandma started preparing me for school. She would make me do all types of activities with pennies, having me review my sight words, read Dr. Seuss books or listen to her read to me, and taught me to love history. My Grandma instilled the hunger of learning in me, which have helped fuel my academic success in English, History, and Mathematics. Using the resources that has been set for me has been a vital part of me excelling in class. Reviewing my notes, homework, and test have helped me stay on top of my grades. Being able to review the material has allowed me to study the material and use it for future classes. The Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program has been a vital resource in my achievement in high school. AVID taught me time management skills, how to take quick in depth notes called Cornell Notes, study skills and techniques, and how to interpret information into higher level questions to make sure I knew the information I am receiving in class. Then in AVID class I was able to come to class with questions I needed guidance with and have a college student tutor me. With AVID giving me much needed strategies, resources, and the guidance of tutors I am able to excel in my classes. In our track lockeroom there is a poster that says “For out in the world you’ll find success begins with a fellows will.” In order to excel in my classes I must me self motivated. I know succeeding in school will give me the foundation I need to succeed in life. So I will do whatever I can to make sure I excel in my classes. I excel in English, History, and

It is certain that when you are exposed to an author’s work you want to categorize that author into a certain group. Perhaps this practice of categorizing a composer can help the reader understand the piece of literature. Henry Gates has helped understand and criticize many African American Literature authors that are exposed through the canon in secondary English Education. As a teacher, it is essential to introduce Postcolonialism into the classroom as well as postcolonialist critics such as Henry Gates Jr. Furthermore, as I teach my African American literature class I have found myself searching for supplemental material to suppose the authors that I introduce in the class. The Signifying Monkey has certainly made valid and original points that I would be inclined to bring in my class room. Many may agree that Gates’ work is a multilayered approach and includes many open ended questions through the profound ideals that are presented. Furthermore, Gates presents very abstract and advance ideas for the time that his book was published. I found his work to be astounding although very challenging to wade through in one sitting.…

There comes a time or two in our lives where we struggle with certain aspects which we will overcome at a later time in life. As a child, I was told that I was very outgoing and friendly, but I felt like a shy and quiet soul. While my friends were shining stars and found merriment in groups, I was just merely a shadow behind them, finding content in being alone. However, teachers would notice this trait of mine and try to pull me out of my shell time and time again. When facing the judgemental eyes of my teacher and curious classmates, I would freeze up and an uneasiness would fill my body from head to toe. Panic would set in and my words would come out in a jumbled mess. Public speaking was just not my forte.…

Motivation from other is the key to success. Without motivation from others, a person will never know what he or she did wrong, will not have any determination to do anything, and will not strive to do better. For example, if a person wants to run a six km marathon, he would asks their family or friends for some support. Family would dedicate their time and money to help support their children to run the six km marathon. When that marathon comes, the family and friends would go to the event and cheer for that person. With that kind of motivation and support that would make the person feel happy and successful. If the person finishes last or first, his family and friends would go comfort the person giving him good comments like “You did a great job!” or “You almost had it. Next time you’ll get it!”…
