Garrett Morgan
Garrett Morgan was an inventor and businessmen born in Paris Kentucky, best known for inventing the earliest model of the gas mask, named the Morgan Safety Hood and Smoke Protector, and the traffic light. His additions to the scientific world and to everyday life still help us today. Morgan was born in Kentucky on March 4, 1877. He only attended elementary school, but later hired a private tutor to take care of the rest of his schooling. When Morgan was 18 he left his family to move to Cleveland, Ohio, where he went to repair sewing machines. In 1907, Morgan opened an equipment and repair shop of his own, and soon expanded it to a tailoring shop. Garrett Morgan soon became a very prosperous individual, and was able to buy a home and a car, which inspired him to improve traffic signals. Morgan’s earliest invention, the gas mask, was put into use early in Morgan’s career. In 1916, Morgan made national news for using his gas mask to rescue 32 people from an explosion in an underground tunnel. After the rescue mission, Morgan’s company was bombarded with requests to purchase one of his gas masks. With the new addition of automobiles to America’s daily life, roadways were hectic and confusing. Accidents and collisions were inevitable. Travel by car was overall messy and disorganized. After watching a crash between a car and a carriage, Morgan set to work on his newest invention, the traffic light. Morgan acquired his patent for his traffic light in 1923. In regard to his patent, Morgan stated “This invention relates to traffic signals, and particularly to those which are adapted to be positioned adjacent the intersection of two or more streets and are manually operable for directing the flow of traffic... In addition, my invention contemplates the provision of a signal which may be readily and cheaply manufactured." Morgan’s traffic light included three positions: Stop, go, and a four-way stop. The four-way stop was to allow pedestrians to walk across

The novel “Jasper Jones” by Craig Silvey is narrated in first person point of view by Charlie Bucktin (the main character of the book). But why? The book is called “Jasper Jones” yet it is told from Charlie’s point of view. This is because the story is about a girl called Laura Wishart committing suicide, which Charlie and Jasper try to find out why this happened, thinking that someone had actually murdered her. If the story was told from Jasper’s point of view the story would be less believable because of the false idea that all Aboriginal people are bad which means everything they say a lie. So instead it is told from Charlie’s point of view because he is European/white which makes his story believable and more credible.…

Marcus Mabry came from a poor family but worked hard to make into Stanford which contrasts heavily with his family’s suffering. Mabry describes his two very different lives between the poverty he and his family endured living in New Jersey and his newfound life at Stanford University. Marcus Mabry paints the differences of his two worlds to the reader in more than one way. First, he explains the economical differences between the two geographical areas, he describes his hometown as the slums or a place where people go to survive, not to live. In contrast, Stanford is a place of freedom and being worry free, where the world is perfect and there is no such thing as poverty, but Mabry gets a reality check every time he visits his family in New Jersey. He feels responsible for his family and wishes there was something he could do to help them. The fact that Mabry has encountered these life situations make him very proud of his accomplishments “Somewhere in the midst of all that misery, my family has built, within me, a “proud feeling.” Mabry followed his heart and put his education at a high priority in his life. Seeing the conditions his family was living in sparked a fire within him to do better and become someone. He knew that if he tried that he would succeed and make his whole family proud. Yet not only is he proud of himself, he is proud of his family for not giving up and breaking down even though they have every right to “As I travel between the two worlds it becomes harder to remember just how proud I should be – not just of where I have come from and where I am going, but because of where they are. The fact that they survive in the world in which they live is something to be very proud of, indeed” Although he may not be the typical student at Stanford, he knows that he comes from a strong family that support his decisions. He wants nothing more than to give what he can to his family and hates seeing them…

As I stated in my introduction, Garrett Morgan created the safety hood, an item similar to the gas mask. He was influenced to create and patent this invention when he heard about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in 1911, that he believed could have resulted with fewer people killed with the use of his safety hood. Garrett also created the traffic signal. Though there had been several different models of signals to help guide traffic, Garrett Morgan patented his own version, because he was aware of the issue with accidents with automated vehicles at that time. Garrett also came up with the idea of flat-ironing and his own black hair dye, along…
