According to John DiConsiglio between 70% and 90% of teens in the United States play video games and it is said that 5% to 10% of those kids are addicted to gaming, but what about the other 80%? Although people may argue that the internet or video games cause adolescents to have antisocial personalities that isn’t necessarily true for every person. The internet and videogames can have positive impacts on both the world and people’s lives. The internet and both online and video games aren’t detrimental to adolescents’ intellectual and social development because they can be used for educational tools and they allow teens to become more involved in the world around them.…

A research was done in Singapore that showed that children were impulsive and unstable in controlling their emotions (Netzley 61). “They were also more likely to be socially incompetent” (Netzley 61). Children were to act more hostile due to their game addiction and were simply not as sociable. The children’s hostile acts are drawn from their addiction and the video games that they play. Their inquisitive minds are linked to the video games. A risk factor from the consistency of video games includes impulses (Gentile). Gamers have a sudden feeling to continue to play, not being able to restrain themselves (See Fig. 1). They act as if video games are the most important thing in the world and cannot get enough of it. “However, gaming can easily get out of hand, causing people to lose sleep, skip work, and otherwise shirk responsibilities when they cannot control their impulse to play games” (Netzley 59). Gamers tend to forget about their daily lives and shift their minds completely on video games. They act as if video games are the only things that are developed in this world, when they could be doing other things, such as going outside. Limitations are strongly needed to decrease these obsessive…

Children and adults alike flock by the thousands to pick up and take home the latest video games. These days there are hundreds of video game titles to choose from on many different platforms so one is sure to find one that suits them. This trend has spawned an enormous economic force both in the United States and worldwide. According to 1up.com, video game sales were actually down in 2004 to $9.9 billion from $10 billion in 2003 in the United States alone (Lee). Perhaps more importantly is that this has produced a cultural trend as well. As more and more children define their lives through video games more and more children are becoming adults who also define their lives through video games. This is a growing problem in this country that entertainment is starting to take over the lives of more and more people. This is not necessarily to the fault of any single factor but a combination of many. The increasing complexity and realism of games has much to do with it. EverQuest is such a stimulating simulation in that many people prefer the ‘EverQuest World ' to the real one. Also to blame are the parents who choose to allow this ‘electronic babysitter ' into their homes more and more often. Perhaps the most to blame is the interactive environment some games create. That is, games of the MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing game) class. The most notorious and arguably the best game of this genre is EverQuest. It has single-handedly brought to national attention the effects of video game addiction (VGA). Cultural values deemed essential to a fulfilled life are cast aside in lieu of a virtual reality and steps need to be taken to recover those affected or prevent it altogether. Common, important, and exciting portions of life like having a job, a family, friends and a love life come second to video games. Once the condition of VGA is identified, the support of friends, family or support groups are crucial in reversing it.…

New research identifies some video game users, particularly online users, who became hooked on interactive games and then see their lives become increasingly unmanageable. Many articles are available that look at the addictive qualities of the games and who is susceptible to becoming addicted. Other research looks at how this addiction compares to addictions such as drug and alcohol abuse and pathological gambling. Since computer game addiction is relatively new, there are few tools to measure the extent of addictiveness and how much the addictiveness affects the lives of the persons who are experiencing it. Computers, the Internet and video game consoles have invaded our homes and have also become extremely portable. With video gaming becoming more popular every day, a consumer needs to be aware of the affects of this new addiction.…

My research topic is trying to figure out the relationship between online game players and their real life. Through observing researches on various groups of game players, I bring forth questions for game players such as, what is the motive to play games? What positions do game players have at their work? What roles are game players playing in the society? Are they “losers” (in general meaning – at the bottom of social status) in reality? Does game assist them to be successful in the daily life? Many questions and considerations need to be investigated and evaluated.…

Playing video games is an activity that it is becoming more popular every year. However, playing excessively will increase personal and social problems. There are people who set their priorities by putting video games as their number one item among a list which also contains sleep, school, job, and household chores. There are disagreements about whether video games are an addiction or not, but the real question is: Why do people play video games excessively? Studies show statistics on video game users, and the information is that users are typically male, aged between 15 and 20, and play around 20 hours per week. The occurrence of this addiction is not well-understood; the media has shown that video game addiction, problem video game playing, and healthy video game playing are different psychological terms.…

The researchers sought to determine the motivators behind sustaining and eventually quitting compulsive playing of MMORPGs. MMORPGs were operationalized as World of Warcraft and was used in exploring the social, behavioral, and humanistic motivators behind compulsive playing. An open-ended approach was utilized in interviewing six participants, all admitted to having played an average of at least 30 hours a week. Questions which encouraged them to describe their experience in sustaining and eventually giving up their compulsions gave the researchers a view of the totality of their experience. The responses were evaluated through the lens of the Thematic Analysis method. In evaluating their responses, social and humanistic themes encompassed both motivations to sustain and quit playing. For sustaining compulsive play, friendships, reinforcement of a gamer identity, achievement, and escape from reality were highlighted as recurring themes. For quitting, the themes of failure as well as friendship were identified as the primary motivation. The study builds on existing literature concerning video game compulsion but carries implications in understanding identity development, peer relationship, and coping amongst young people.…
