Gambling Should Be Eliminated

Gambling originates from the ancient Chinese society where two tenants would place their bets against their landlords and gamble in a form of poker. Now, any form of game that involves money betting is considered gambling, including 4D, Toto, Lottery Sweep and casino games. Due to the alluring amount of revenue casinos can bring to a nation, countries are known to set up casinos such as the Las Vegas “gambling city”, those in Genting of Malaysia and the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. These casinos are not only known to attract locals, but also foreign tourists who flock there to try their luck. However, in current society, addicted gamblers and shattered families are commonly seen and reported in the news. Since gambling brings problems to the society and benefits only to the dealers, gambling should be eliminated. Firstly, an increasing number of youths aged 12 to 20 are being caught working as runners for illegal money lenders ever since the Marina Bay Sands casinos are being built. These youths usually want to earn some quick money to satisfy their materialistic wants, but land into a huge debt instead. To solve the problem, they avoid confronting their parents but seek help from these illegal money lenders for help to pay off the debts, but owe a great sum of money to the lenders, hence creating a vicious cycle where the youths would never be able to pay off their debts, including the high interests. Thus, these youths work for the money lenders as runners who would go about harassing people to pay up to gradually pay off their debts. Since gambling has a bad and worsening influence on youths, gambling should be eliminated. Secondly, gambling causes an addiction to develop, just like taking drugs. From a Chinese proverb translated to English, “Out of 10 gambles, you lose 9”, the chance of winning a bet when gambling is slim.
