Future Predictions

According to Bob Dylan life has a price for everyone to pay. “No one is free, even the birds are chained to the sky.” He said this probably not knowing the connection it has to George Orwell’s 1984. It makes a point by saying no individual is free and even an innocent creature is locked in fear. In 1984 Winston Smith is he is stuck in fear. The three ways that focuses in his future are urban decay, total control, and intimidation. He is trying to figure out his past and what is real and what is fake in this world.

People feel like they are always being watched and someone is controlling their lives. “It was exactly the kind of detail that might betray you.” (Orwell 27). Never knowing what details were real and which ones are fake. The Ministry of Truth controlled your thoughts on what was real because you never really know the truth. History was altered to control the future and past. “Already we know almost literally nothing about the Revolution and the years before the Revolution. Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, and every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day-by-day and minute-by-minute. History has stopped.” (Orwell 128). The past events cannot be believed because it is written from ones person point of view, which makes it one, sided.

The city had fallen under the urban decay there was no working mechanics. Going out to play did not exist; moldy food was a usual meal. “She has a habit of breaking off her sentences in the middle. The kitchen sink was full nearly to the brim with filthy greenish water which smelt worse then ever of cabbage.” (Orwell 21). You became used to certain routines and having bad food was normal. Never knowing what you were going to eat the next day happened to. Winston experienced urban decay when he had to take advantage of the slow moving stairs. “Winston made for the stairs.
