Functions of Management Paper
There are four functions in management. These functions are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. As a prospective manager it is important to be able to define and understand these functions. This paper will help to ensure an understanding of these functions by defining each function individually and by relating it to my current understanding of management in an organization I am familiar with. For the purpose of completing this assignment I will refer to MFR (Michigan Family Resources), which is the administrative office for the Head Start program located in Kent County, Michigan.
The first function of management, planning, is the “management function of systematically making decisions about the goals and activities that an individual, a group, a work unit, or the overall organization will pursue” (Bateman & Snell, 2009). This means that managers are responsible for planning not only events and what types of actions the company will participate in, but they must also plan for the future of the company. This process involves understanding the current condition of the company to better anticipate the future. In the past it was common for managers to plan and delegate tasks for employees, but in more recent years it has become common for managers to work with other departments within the company to form plans. This collaboration allows the company to benefit from the vast experience and knowledge that comes from a meeting of the minds. I know that during my experience at MFR there was a definite collaboration between those in management roles and those who worked with or below this department. It seemed that in this setting management was mostly responsible for implementing the decisions made by the board of directors, but they would have much leeway in the planning process including how tasks would be carried out or fulfilled.
