Introduction and Definition of Key Terms
In this modern society, everyone has his role, and it is a must to play it well in order to have a place in this world, which requires years of observation and practice. From my understanding, status is something that speaks for me and leaves people with a first impression. It might be a stereotypical impression, especially for ascribed status, but people’s view will vary from time to time, based on personal’s behavior. And for achieved status, everyone has their own performance, which adds variety to this society. It is very essential for each individual to balance between their achieved status and ascribed status so that as a person, he can keep his integrity as well as build up his character and personality, which can be also referred as personal role in society.

Statuses and Roles
Achieved Status and Corresponding Roles
I have several achieved status, such as student, employee, and puppy owner, and here I want to talk about my major one, as a student. This is the last summer for me to be a student, and so far I have been as a student for 18 years. After my gradation, I will transfer to a full- time employee and end my student life, which is the main reason I picked this achieved status of mine. Since 18 years experience, I have come to know by myself that there is no requirement for me to be excellent and superior among my prior, but I need to try my best and challenge my own limits. I always remember that when I was young, my family told me that everyone has their own advantages. For example, I am really good at analyze the timing for an opportunity and work with people. I always strived to do the best that I can, in everything that I do, and this especially applies to academics. In 6th grade, I joined the honors program at my middle school; from then on forward, I made sure than my work was of high enough quality so that the following year I would be placed in honors courses. These courses are what I believe prepared me for my success in high school. I got a taste of what it was like to be in an environment where every pupil was hungry for an education and for knowledge, and I grew to want to learn as much as my classmates. I entered high school with courses that upperclassmen had that challenged me more than anything else had before. It was during my freshman year of high school that I realized that I couldn’t…

I see myself as a fully functioning member of society with many roles and statuses. In the social world I have many contributing factors that I will explain in more detail within the paper. My ascribed status or status attained at birth is that of a caucasian, female, daughter. These are self explanatory statuses and need no greater details. Mother, student, and Registered Medical Assistant are my achieved statuses, statuses that I have voluntarily earned. I became a Mother in the year 2000 with the birth of my daughter Emily, I was a wife for seven years but since I am no longer in that role I have not included it in my paper. Student is a status I gained earlier this year when I made the choice to return to school to get a degree in another field of study. I wanted to be able to provide more for my family. I became a Registered Medical Assistant in 2010 after going back to school the first time. It was sadly the same time that the economy started to fall and I was unable to find a job in that field. I do, however, keep my credentials up by completing continuing education since I put all the work in to achieve that status. There are also the master statuses to mention. These are statuses that have special importance since they pertain to my identity and overshadows all the other statuses. They can shape a persons life and can be either…

In the United States today, ascribed status is extensively influential in determining one’s social class. Commonly associated with race and gender, ascribed social statuses can serve as obstacles in many individual’s lives. Schaefer (2015) stated, although Malcolm X was an alarmingly intelligent young man and graduated near the top of his class, teachers persistently discouraged him. While Malcolm dreamed of becoming a lawyer, one teacher suggested he pursue carpentry instead. At that moment, Malcolm concluded that his race prevented him from becoming a successful lawyer and achieving his dreams (pg. 107). For many minorities, as well as women, their ascribed statuses will ceaselessly penalize them. For example, for an entire year, my 6th grade…

Family and friends are usually the most significant motivation to one’s actions because the concern for his or her family and friends will cause them to do whatever necessary to please them. The influence of family and friends may also affect one’s view of life and this would affect one to act differently in order to carry out his or her new attitude towards life (Boeree). An individual is part of a larger whole, the society, which means that one must to live up to society’s expectations to gain respect and acceptance (The Theory and Application of Adlerian Psychology). A solution to their shared problems of adjustment is to jointly establish new norms, new criteria of status which define as meritorious the characteristics they possess, the kinds of conduct of which they are capable (Cohen 188-189). These social formations then act on their newly formed values; their conduct becomes reputable because it is considered non-reputable outside of the group (Cohen…

Striving for higher social status has been the downfall of many people just as it was the destruction of Emma Bovary. In Nineteenth Century France, several class existed: peasant or working class, middle class, upper-middle class, bourgeois, and aristocrats. In the story, "Madame Bovary," we see a number of individuals striving to move themselves up to the bourgeois, a status that is higher than the working class but not as high as nobility. The bourgeois are characterized by being educated and wealthy but unlike the aristocracy, they earned their money through hard work and kept it through frugality (Britannica).…
