1. Availability of Parking o Parking is one of the major hassles for people who go into the city to shop. Shopping at malls eliminates this problem, because parking is provided either free of charge or for a nominal fee. Shopping malls incorporate vast parking areas into their design and construction. This makes it advantageous for people to choose to shop at a mall rather than a single store. Families who choose to visit a mall on the weekend or holiday for a family outing find it to be a more convenient option mainly because parking is provided.
One-Stop Shopping and Entertainment Center o Visiting a mall is advantageous because of the numerous stores housed in one complex. Groceries, clothes, shoes, reading material, food courts, cinemas and entertainment arcades are available in one place. It is possible to spend an entire day out at the mall, shopping, eating, taking in a movie or playing games. Malls make great meeting places for friends to catch up over coffee at a café or a meal at the food court. Families get to do their weekly shopping, pick up odds and ends and keep the kids entertained at the mall. o Sponsored Links

In the introduction of his book "One Nation Under Goods", James Farrell explores malls and the effects they have on society. Farrell claims that shopping at malls is such a common part of our lives that we take it for granted and overlook what is really going on at the mall, a large-scale cultural interaction. When we go to malls, not only are we searching for items to purchase, we are also searching for an identity. Farrell even makes the claim that malls are similar to churches and museums; they're places where we can figure out our values. He talks about how everything in the mall, from the product design to the architecture, is constructed to please the consumer. He says that there is a "conspiracy of customer satisfaction" at the mall and that the workers genuinely want to please the shopper. Farrell's main claim is that society as a whole gets it's values and culture from the nation's malls, yet he complicates his argument by briefly mentioning consumerism in his last paragraph.…

In “The ‘Magic of the Mall’: An Analysis of Form, Function, and Meaning in the Contemporary Retail Built Environment”, Jon Goss explains the motives of the modern mall. With shopping being America’s second most loved activity, developers have found that there are large amounts of profit to be made from shopping malls. Developers build malls in hopes that a good mix of tenants will arrive, that they will keep a certain middle to upper class demographic in the mall, and that they will keep high-quality, non-thrift stores out of their mall. The insides of shopping malls are built to emulate old-style markets with lampposts, fountains, social/leisure areas, and shrubbery. Some malls allow civic spaces within them including post offices, police…

I could not help but to think that the purpose of a shopping mall was for everyone to have one convenient place to buy anything they desired. But, the viewpoints expressed though "Community through Exclusion and Illusion" by George Lewis and "Shopping for American Culture," by James J. Farrell, have led me to believe that the shopping mall also serves as a community center. Another article which captured my attention was Ira Zepp's, "The Shopping Mall as Sacred Place." They each express their ideas of how the shopping mall is not just a place to shop due to it's constantly availability, which has created an ideal environment for social interaction for people of all ages. Farrell…

Store location is an important decision for retailers because location is “typically one of the most influential considerations in a customer’s store-choice decision” (Retailing, 167). Most consumers choose which store to visit based on close proximity to home or work, comfort level, and other surrounding retailers so shopping stays relaxing and a lot of driving isn’t needed. Victoria’s Secret in the Beverly Center is in a shopping mall. Reasoning behind the store being placed in the mall across from the elevators in the center is because malls have high amounts of traffic. Another reason why a mall location has its advantages, because malls provide the chance to combine shopping with entertainment, a great place to walk around catch up with friends while getting your shopping done, bringing in large numbers of people a day.…

The World’s First Modern Shopping Mall by James Grahame touches exactly on what I am thinking of. The first shopping mall ever created back in 1956 by Victor Gruen was intended to help communities by bringing people together to shop, chat, and spend time with their loved ones and friends. Many places used the concept and made even more malls all across the United States. He wanted them act as a substitute for the arcades found in old European cities and give people easy access within walking distance. No one could have anticipated what would…
