In Denmark, protests by Muslims erupted around the world after a Danish newspaper published caricatures of the prophet Muhammad. In the United States, derogatory remarks Harvard University President Larry Summers made about women in science led to his resignation. And the congressional campaign of Sen. George Allen of Virginia took a hit after he made what many found to be offensive remarks toward an ethnic group. Looking at these situations it makes me ponder whether should there be limits to freedom of expression. I strongly believe that there should me limits to anything especially to the freedom of expressions.
There should be limits to freedom of expression because we have to respect others. It is indeed undeniable that everyone has the right to speak what it is on their mind. However upon spewing out words on something the person must not offend others. And if it really necessary to do so, do it in the nicest way so the other party would not be offended but still the message is able to be delivered. In addition in doing whatever we think is our rights we should never forget that others have their rights to and we need to respect them. If you don’t like something it doesn’t mean that others must abandon it. Agree to disagree. The world is not only to be live alone but to live with others in the most harmonious way.
Next there should be limits to the freedom of expression to protect the public safety. Expression can be in many ways whether in the words coming out from a person mouth, a written statement on personal Facebook or even a protest by a large group of people. What might became a danger to the whole community and having a large risk of creating a commotion is the protest of these large people. It is their right to portray their discomfort in a protest but a protest such what happened in Malaysia during Bersih 2.0 is lightly disappointing as it can cause harm to the people wh walks at the area and the hawkers.
