Free Speech Can Ensure Responsibility

      Derek Bok served as president of Harvard University from 1971 to 1991.   Born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Bok received his undergraduate education from Stanford University and a law degree from Harvard University.     Bok was compelled to publish an essay in the Boston Globe in 1991 entitled Protecting Freedom of Expression on the Campus as a result of students displaying various flags from their dorm windows.   Bok was a fierce First amendment advocate who felt that the freedom of expression is protected by the first amendment.   He felt it was equally important to distinguish between the appropriateness of such communications and their status under the First amendment.   It was glaringly obvious to Bok that because a communication is protected by the Constitution, it did not necessarily make it right or civil.

      Stanley Milgram was a professor at Yale and Harvard Universities and at the graduate Center, City University in New York.   During his tenure at Yale in 1963, he formulated an experiment to test the compliance of people to submit to authority even though it would violate their conscience.   In 1974, he published his research in a book entitled, Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View.   In the same year he wrote an essay which discussed the main theme of his book entitled the Perils of Obedience.   Milgram states that “For many people, obedience is a deeply ingrained behavior tendency, indeed a potent impulse overriding training in ethics, sympathy and moral conduct” (Milgram 883).

      I believe free speech should not be burdened by intrusive government regulation.   In my analysis of the essays by Derek Bok and Stanley Milgram, I hope to demonstrate the wisdom and necessity for the unfettered right of free speech.   I believe a free society requires a thinking, diverse and independent group of...
