SHELLEY’S FRANKENSTEIN: THE MODERN PROMETHEUS IS A GOTHIC NOVEL OR NOT ! For - Gothic| Against – Romantic Era|
RevengeThe novel contains revenge because of the mentioning of the quote; “When I reflected on his crimes and malice, my hatred and revenge burst all bounds of moderation. I would have made a pilgrimage to the highest peak of the Andes, could I when there have precipitated him to their base. I wished to see him again, that I might wreak the utmost extent of abhorrence on his head and avenge the deaths of William and Justine” Victor seeks revenge on the monster, because of all the murders the creature has caused. Victor uses strong emotions to show his feelings towards the monster. This quote shows revenge because of visual imagery which is created by the strong emotive words used in the quote. The way the quote is written you can understand that it is a tense moment and Victor wants revenge from the monster.Revenge is a key part of gothic novels, because normally in these novels one of the protagonist’s adversaries is killed, so the hero goes to avenge his fallen companion. So that is why this novel is from the gothic genre.| GodThe novel mentions God because of the mentioning of the quote;"Great God! If for one instant I had thought what might be the hellish intention of my fiendish adversary, I would rather have banished myself forever from my native country and wandered a friendless outcast over the earth than have consented to this miserable marriage. But, as if possessed of magic powers, the monster had blinded me to his real intentions; and when I thought that I had prepared only my own death, I hastened that of a far dearer victim."With this quote you can tell that Victor is talking to God because of the mention of “Great God” in the beginning of the quote.During the romantic era, religion was an important part of life, so authors tried to mention God relatively in most of the novel.During that era there used to be connections between civilians and God. So this is a reason why this novel is from the romantic era.| CompassionThe novel contains compassion because of the mentioning of the quote;”These thoughts exhilarated me and led me to apply with fresh ardour to the acquiring the art of language. My organs were indeed harsh, but supple; and although my voice was very unlike the soft music of their tones, yet I pronounced such words as I understood with tolerable ease. It was as the ass and the lap-dog; yet surely the gentle ass whose intentions were affectionate, although his manners were rude, deserved better treatment than blows and execration.”This quote shows the monster reasoning that his inner self should be the basis in which people judge and not his appearance. His appearance is not the best but it is still harmless. He relies in his inner compassion to be the forefront when he is being judged. The author uses strong emotive words which make us sympathise with the monster, this allows us to see the monster’s point of view.Compassion is key part of the gothic genre, because in gothic novels a victim tries to persuade the protagonist that they are not evil using compassion. So this is another reason why this novel is from the gothic genre.| Science vs. NatureThe novel contains science because of the mentioning of the quote;“No one can conceive the variety of feelings which bore me onwards, like a hurricane, in the first enthusiasm of success… A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me”"I was seized by remorse and the sense of guilt, which hurried me away to a hell of intense tortures, such as no language can describe."These quotes show that Victor was being obsessed with science that he tried to control nature with it. He tried to play god by creating a new species which would worship him as god. However this backfired because his creation turned against him and murdered his loved ones. This shows that science can never take...
