Design Plan

The school requires us to do a research project on the durability of zinc-carbon cell and alkaline cell. My hypothesis for my experiment is that alkaline cell is more expensive, because the material is more expensive therefore alkaline cell is better than zinc-carbon cell. My aim is to have a better understanding of cells, the durability of zinc-carbon cell and alkaline cell, their advantages and their disadvantages, and the benefit on human development. My investigative question is – Does the material of the cell affect the ability of the cell? My apparatus are two identical flash lights, alkaline cell, zinc-carbon cell, stop watch. The method for this experiment is to have two identical flash lights, put a zinc-carbon cell in one flash light, and an alkaline cell in the other. Leave the flash light on for 3 hours each day, until the power runs out. Read the label of each brand of cell, and compare if the description matches the actual time that the cells last. The first flash light to finish therefore means that the cell has less energy than the other cell.

The project that I’m doing now is researching about the durability and ability of the alkaline cell vs. zinc-carbon cell, their similarities and differences, and the reason for manufacturing the cell with this particular material.
