Forgiveness: the act of accusing a mistake or an offence; compassionate feelings that support a willingness to forgive.

During class, we have been looking through the poem ‘Let Us Not Be Bitter’ by Oodgeroo Noonucal. The poem has a message towards the Indigenous people of Australia; let us forget about the past, forgive what has happened and move on, because we have a new, fresh start ahead of us.
In this poem, the author is trying to say that forgiveness is very important between people and their relationships. Forgiveness is a start for all new things- forgiveness and letting go can lead you down the path of healing and peace. It sounds simple, but forgiving is difficult for most of the people- as each person must decide to relinquish any anger, bitterness, blame, resentment and hostility toward others.

Forgiveness, in my perspective, is a way to evolve into freedom for ourselves. By forgiving, you soothe and make your life peaceful. Through forgiveness we can grow up, move on to other things in life and set ourselves free. It is important in everyone’s life; because the act of forgiving releases the hurt and pain that was inflicted on you- and the person you are forgiving.

For us Christians, God has commanded us to forgive each other for sinning against ourselves; he wants us to consider how he has forgiven our sins when we accepted Jesus Christ as our savior. ‘for if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.’ – Matthew 6:14-16, ‘my heavenly Father will do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.’- Matthew 18:35.
And so, forgiveness is at the core of the gospel; Matthew 18-21-22- ‘then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but

“… if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins” (Mark 12:25 NIV). God is expected to forgive his creations, and humans, in their constant struggle to emulate God, follow his teachings. And just as God’s mercy is described as prevailing over his wrath, so in Islam, human to human forgiveness is associated with the control of one’s anger. In fact, one of the characteristics of the Islamic Believer is that “…when they are angry they forgive.” (al-Shura 42:37) Muslims are encouraged to reflect on their own imperfections, and God’s forgiveness for our mistakes, as a reason to offer forgiveness in turn to their fellow humans. Forgiveness among humans is given a high societal value for its ability to heal wounds and promote reconciliation. A similar ideology is expressed in Buddhism, as reflected by the teachings in the Dhammapada. “He abused me, he struck me, he overcame me, he robbed me’ — in those who harbor such thoughts hatred will never cease. ‘He abused me, he struck me, he overcame me, he robbed me’ — in those who do not harbor such thoughts hatred will cease.” Dhammapada…

Despite all the mistakes a person makes shouldn’t forgiveness always be achievable? Kit forgave many people in her life, she forgave her father even after everything he put her through. Kit forgave her mother for not trying hard enough and she forgave many people that entered her life and made mistakes as well. In the novel “Baygirl” by Heather Smith the theme is that there is always room for forgiveness.…

According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of forgive is to stop feeling angry or resentful toward someone for an offense, flaw, or mistake. However, there is a deeper meaning to this. Contrary to some of Harold S. Kushner’s statements, I believe that forgiveness is as beneficial for the victim of the crimes as it is for the offender. In fact, I am far more inclined to agree with Jose Hobday’s views. He states that…

Jean Vanier has done a beautiful job with this book in describing how forgiveness works. In chapter five, he gives us principles, steps, and characteristics that will help us reach forgiveness. Vanier states “Forgiveness is the process of removing barriers; it is the process by which we start to accept and to love those who have hurt us.” (Pg. 136). In other words, you don’t seek revenge but to accept and love the person who has hurt you. Hurt, can involve a person physically hurting you or you speaking bad about a person who has spoken in a bad way about you. Vanier, also states that there are two types of guilt the psychological; which is caused by other people and the moral guilt; caused by ourselves. Vanier, also states “To forgive is to…

Is it possible to forgive a wrong done to someone else? Should only those who repent be forgiven? Is forgiveness a selfish act, a way to make ourselves feel better? To forgive is to set one free, to acknowledge that it does no good to hate. Hate really destroys both the other person and yourself. That realization is what I think taught me about forgiveness, and so I try my best to live by it. I think forgiveness is an huge aspect of our humanity. I think many of us are brought up to believe that if we don’t somehow forgive, whatever it is that’s ailing, troubling, angering, enraging or shaming us, or getting us in any way worked up, is going to live longer without forgiveness, whether it’s ourselves or others we’re forgiving.…

Forgiveness in the bible is one of the greatest blessings that God has given us, and one of the greatest blessings we can give to others. If we all lived by the mantra “an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth,” we would all be blind and toothless. Instead, we must forgive others who wrong us, just as our Father has forgiven us. But sometimes forgiveness isn’t easy. Betrayal and abuse can hurt (both emotionally and physically), which can cause us to struggle with true forgiveness. In fact, we can sometimes hurt ourselves worse by not forgiving the offender in our life, as opposed to simply forgiving them and moving on. What complicates this even more is questions like: What is forgiveness? Do we have to forgive those who never apologize? Do things have to return to normal? Having experienced a lot of emotional pain myself, I have often struggled with forgiveness, holding grudges. In addition to not punishing the person, we must also work to let go of the feelings of anger, hatred, and resentment. This is by far the hardest part for most people. But if we allow the hatred to linger, it can consume us and make us into a miserable and bitter person. Thus, we actually bring more pain on ourselves than the offender did. Anger itself isn’t a sin. It is a natural emotion. The bible tells us: “In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold (Ephesians 4:26).”So while we have rights to be angry when we are wronged, we should not allow that anger lead to sin, bitterness, or a grudge. We must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and move forward with our lives. If we allow the anger to linger, then we invite Satan’s ways into our lives. This leads to misery and corruption. Let it go, and move on. Pray for help if needed, or speak to a counselor or friend if you are struggling. God forgives us, and we should forgive others. We are commanded to forgive. We are blessed when we give. Others are also blessed…

We believe that God forgives us our sins; but also that He will not do so unless we forgive other people their sins against us. There is no doubt about the second part of this statement. It is in the Lord's Prayer, it was emphatically stated by our Lord. If you don't forgive you will not be forgiven. No exceptions to it. He doesn't say that we are to forgive other people's sins, provided they are not too frightful, or provided there are extenuating circumstances, or anything of that sort. We are to forgive them all, however spiteful, however mean, however often they are repeated. If we don't we shall be forgiven none of our own.…
