In For Whom the Bell Tolls Robert Jordan’s mission is a failure

In For Whom the Bell Tolls there is colossal strife and resistance against the Robert Jordan. In the book Robert Jordan is charged with the project of destroying a bridge in Segovia prior to a loyalist offensive during the Spanish civil war. Over the course of the book he acquires many disturbances that cause him to not think with a clear head. He falls in love with a gorgeous Spanish Native who clouds his mind with love and he alienates the leader of a guerilla company that’s helping him and he is staying with. The loyalist onslaught that was planned was a complete and total catastrophe. In the book For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemmingway Robert Jordan’s mission was a failure because of the multiple distractions and Stress that was acquired over the course of the mission. Robert Jordan started out with no one in his life that he loved when he took the loyalist cause. He had an idealized and clouded mind that gave him the ability to act without hesitating, however that all changes when he comes across Maria. “Maria is under the protection of Pablo’s band after having been raped by the Falangists who killed her parents” (mangum 1528) This all adds to the internal conflict within Robert Jordan because he now has unnecessary distractions and he also makes the mistake of falling in love with Maria and like love always dose it blinds him. Like Pilar says “yet one has a feeling within one that blinds a man while he loves. “You, with that feeling blind, him and blind yourself.” (Hemingway 98) Love blinds Robert causing him to ponder other events instead of concentrating on the task at Hand. Another reason Maria is a distraction is that, she leads him to fear death. Where as he was committed to the cause even though he is now disillusioned to the atrocities of war (Perkins 31), One such instances of these atrocities is revealed to us by Pilar.
