Football Analysis Louis Jenkins
Title
The title is FOOTBALL which basically is what the person in this poem is playing.
The character is also a quarterback and for those who don’t know what a quarterback he’s basically the person who has the football and creates plays for the team to score. So a play maker.

Literal meaning
The quarter back receieves the ball and he’s faking while someone holds off the opposition for him to find a wide receiver to score a touchdown. While he’s making a decision on what his next play shold be he realizes that his decision in a game relates to the decisions he makes off the field.
After this, he concludes that the receiver downfield isn’t in a good position hence he doesn’t give him the ball thus finding another option.

Structure
This poem is also 1 big chunk. It might be maybe because the poem describes just 1 second of a football game, everything is going so fast that the author crammed everything together to show the speed of the game.

The part in the poem where the character links football and life together is like a journey through an individuals mind. He realizes that decision making on the football field is quite similar to his decisions off it.

Lines that jump out in this poem starts from “I realize that this is a world where anything is possible and I understand, also, that one often has to make do with what one has. I have eaten pancakes, for instance, with that clear corn syrup on them because there was no maple syrup and they weren’t very good.” These few lines show that the quarterback is comparing his current situation to times in his life where he has to make a compromise. In this case he has to make a compromise to get tackled to play it safe instead of risking the ball being intercepted and losing possession.

Each individual creates their own choices to stumble upon their experience which may either trigger awful consequences or opportunities on their new path in life and into the world. J.C. Burke’s “The Story of Tom Brennan”, employs the story of the protagonist, Tom Brennan, and his family as they embark upon new journeys and decisions to restart their new lives in Coghill. Their horrific past explains the reason of their move from Mumbilli to their grandmother’s house. The reputation of the Brennan’s was once great and happiness filled their lives, however all is lost when Daniel, Luke and Nicole had a car accident. Football was once Tom’s only favourite sport. Unfortunately, in his new world, it meant nothing. It is just a game to fill in the time. He has lost his edge for he feels uncomfortable “For me, playing footy would never be the same. Here in Coghill, it would just be something to fill in the time – the endless, endless time”.…

The main thing about this poem is its theme, and that theme seems to portray one of someone who most likely has depression, or something of the sort. The reason it may possibly be seen as true is the wording Nono-footballic used in line number 4, where it says, “Crack a joke to reassure them you are fine.” That line ties in well with “Make up a lie” from line number 2. These both tell that they would rather keep to themself on what they feel than burden anyone with their emotional problems. This could be proven by line number 8 and the words, “Lock yourself up in the bathroom and cry.” They’re saying they isolate themself from everyone else so they can let their emotions out.…

The symbolism and scatological imagery establishes a decaying, decrepit and depressing environment, which reveals Billy’s isolation. Another evocative portrait is the internal monologue in the poem "Sport" in chapter one. The 'pain and suffering’ of 'soulless tyranny' endured by Billy, from 'the old bastard' his father.…

Updike makes his theme clear with the tone of the poem. He makes it seem calm but at the same time the poem is depressing because the reader feels pitty for Flick and how his life has changed. Updike uses many other literary devices in the poem to make the theme clear also.“His hands were like wild birds” (18) this is a simile explaining that Flick’s hands were graceful and free, yet in control like how Flick was with the basketball. “Idiot pumps” (7) the gas pumps are idiots standing motionless and oblivious while Flick dribbles and works around them, this metaphor again symbolizes Flick remembering his basketball days. Updike also uses personification to convey the theme,“The ball loved Flick" (16) this shows how close Flick was with his love of basketball. All the literary devices in the poem show the reader how Flick is feeling and give the reader an intake on Flicks everyday life.…

The role of the speaker verses the author is necessary to understand in any poem, along with the way it sounds and reads. In this poem, the author and speaker are separate. The speaker seems to be that little voice in someone’s head, making the anxiety and stress worse. It is a man verses man scenario. Someone who is taking an exam is flustered over what success they will have and the speaker is telling him/her that they will most definitely fail. “You will never graduate / from this dream / of blue books” (Pastan, 1-3). The tone Linda Pastan uses is also very condescending, giving the poem more of a punch. It is written in Middle Speech, making it more relatable to readers who have been through the same thing instead of making the speaker sound too distant or too close. Another major thing in the poem that has to do with sounds is the way the lines are paused. One line will be stopped and then another line enjambed. The lines go back and forth and this is a constant pattern throughout almost the entire thing. This seems to represent the uncertainty of the test taker as to whether they will pass or fail.…

“To An Athlete Dying Young” and “Ex-Basketball Player” share the lives of two very different athletes. Both experience success in their lives, but one dies with his glory while the other lives past his days of glory and works at a gas pump where he is not recognized. The poems discuss the importance of having glory and keeping that glory as long as possible. Through the poems the readers learn the benefits of dying young as well as the consequences of living after one's glory has faded. Where Houseman glorifies the athlete for his achievements and early death, Updike portrays the disappointment of the athlete living past his days of glory and not reaching high standards through out is life.…

The structure and the way Bissinger has arranged the book shows that even though the football team was unified and one, each player had a different personality, different situation, and different aspirations. Bissinger dedicates a chapter for each of the main characters (players) of the football team. The reader begins to learn about the students as he/she reads more into the book. In " Boobie", you learn about Boobies injury, and that he has committed his life and put in his all for football. However due to his injured knee, the reader realizes that his dreams will be stopped from numerous obstacles along the way (Bissinger 53). Another example where he uses that structure strategy is in "The Ambivalence of Ivory" and "Dreaming of Heroes", where Bissinger depicts the hardships of Ivory and Mike. Ivory loves to hate the game and most of the times wants to run away from it because he detests the meetings, practices, etc. He throws up before every game to "rid of" any demons. The reader learns of Mike, the quarterback of the football team. His biggest struggle is his lack of confidence and low self esteem. As the story progresses, the reader begins to feel affection for each of the players and gets excited for the games they have won and the disappointed for the games they have lost. At the end of the book Bissinger includes an "Afterward" that describes how each player ended up and how they lived their…

He remembered the biggest moment. His indents in the last stanza really make the poem complete. For example he put indents on the most important moments. This is good because it make the reader stop and think about what happened. In the first couple of lines in the poem the mood is sad and gloomy. Throughout the poem the poet gradually changes the mood. He does this by keeping suspense throughout the poem. The big picture or greater message of this poem is, when life gets you down you just have to get back up and keep going. In this poem it is a metaphor. He uses it by adding the parts of when he was a awful and un-clutch player. But then in the biggest game he steps up and makes the winning play! In some ways this is the poet's life. When the poet was younger he was trying to get a teaching job. He wanted to teach English. He was being hired and then fired. The poet was in a tough spot. So then he started writing poetry. After a couple big poems were released Bill got a head teaching job at Trinity! I think it is really cool how he reflects his life in…

This is the scene in which Gerry has an epiphany about how he acts towards the players on his team and people in general. The evidence is when Coach Boone makes the team run to the Gettysburg memorial to give them a speech about racism. This happens to occur after the scene where Julius responds to Gerry’s criticism with “Attitude reflects leadership”. This then leads up to his epiphany. It is clear to the audience that during these scenes Gerry’s opinion of race and relationship with Julius is changing. After the memorial scene is the next training session. This is when Gerry’s changed opinion is shown as he stops singling out the black players and treating the team as a whole. His friendship with Julius is also affected when it becomes less of a hateful relationship as they celebrate together after a successful block. Towards the end of the film is when it is clear that Gerry’s attitude has changed for the better when he calls Julius his…
