Content: Food Technology Stage 6 HSC Course Core 1: The Australian Food Industry Sectors of the food industry

* Sectors of the agri-food chain in the Aus food industry, including agriculture + fisheries, food processing/manufacturing, food service + catering, food retail

Australian food industry (AFI) includes organized production, processing, storage + marketing of food products. Aus is a continent that experiences many diff climates ranging from northern tropical areas through arid enviros + high rainfall coastal regions. Due to the diversity of our enviro, we can produce a range of raw materials, resulting in a variety of readily available food. We can also take advantage of living in the southern hemisphere (seasonal diffs), we can apply food products to our trading nations ‘out of season’. Aus has also developed new techs (breeding programs, improved genetics, farm management, innovative packaging + transportation systems) to improve our long term competitiveness. Low lvls of pollution in Aus means better quality agricultural products + the Aus gov has provided financial support for research + development.

-The agri-food chain (AFC)
The production + supply of food for individ + consumer use is called the agri-food chain, which consists of four main sectors: -Agriculture + fisheries (agri+fish)
-Food processing/manufacturing (food process)
-Food service + catering (food service)
-Food Retail

The AFC relies on each sector so no sector is independent. A problem in 1 sector of the agri-food chain can have a signif impact on other sectors, affecting production, manufact + ultimately sale + income. The links of the sectors are seen through the digrams. Consumption

-Agriculture + fisheries (agri+fish)
Agri contributes to about only 3% to gross domestic product (GDP), employs 300 000 people + provides new materials to be processed + sold. Agriculture is the cultivation of land to produce food derived from plants + animals. Plant production involves: -Preparing soil for planting -Selecting seeds -Sowing -Fertilising -Irrigating -Harvesting -Storage -Transporting food to various locations

Production of animal meat (sheep, cows, lamb, dairy cattle, gourmet meats (kangaroo, emu, crocodile)) involves: -Producing or supplying fooder/feed + water -Breeding -Treating illnesses + disease -Transporting animals to saleyards, abattoirs + other food processing locations

-About 90% of the total value of Aus agriculture production comes from food. Cereals, dairy + meat are the most signif products in the AFC. Our main cereal crops are wheat, oats, barley, rice, maize + sorghum. Aus’s dairy industry ranks 3rd in the world + is the largest processed food industry in Aus. Its estim that 2mill dairy cows produce 10bill L’s of milk each year, + milk + related products exported to world markets total around 3bill $. The majority of milk in Aus is exported in the form of cheese, milk powder, butter + casein (protein from milk) + whey powder. Asia buys the majority of exports. -The Aus meat industry is well estab, contributing to around $7bill in export earnings. Beef, lamb, pork + poultry are our main exports + been some growth in game + exotic meats. Out meat is...
