THE Philippines has been ranked 63rd of 105 countries surveyed in the Economic Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Global Food Security Index. The country was ranked mid-level in affordability and food quality. It ranked well in nutrition. The EIU Global Food Security Index consists of a set of indices from 105 countries. It ranks countries by their levels of food security, using data on three core issues - affordability, availability, safety and quality. The Index was commissioned by DuPont, a developer of genetically altered crops, to identify areas where reforms are needed, and launched by EIU, an advisory and forecasting research firm. The Global Food Security Index has been cited as "one of the most significant steps" in addressing global hunger. It used data from the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization. The study showed that governments can improve national food security by increasing farmers' access to loans and finances, building food safety nets, and promoting proper nutrition and diversified diet. Using the index, it is suggested that governments, academics, non-government organizations, and farmers groups should share a common objective and chart a comprehensive food security program. The United Nations said that by 2030, the world will need at least 50 percent more food to feed a growing population. We wish Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala, World Bank Country Director for the Philippines Motoo Konishi, Food and Agriculture Organization Assistant Director General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific Hiroyuki Konuma, World Health Organization Regional Director for the Western Pacific Dr. Shin Young-Soo, and DuPont Philippines Managing Director Ramon S. Abadilla, all the success. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!
