What is hunger and what do you think when you think of when you hear the word hunger. Webster dictionary state that hunger is a craving or urgent need for food or a specific nutrient ("Hunger"). What someone might think of when they hear the word hunger is of those commercials of the starving kids in Africa and just for pennies a day you can help feed this child. Do you know that in one out of every sixth adult and one out of every fifth in American goes hunger every day equaling over 50 million people in American (“Hunger in American”). Where are those commercials?
Not getting a sufficient about of nutritional food is not good for anyone but it can affect a child for the rest of its life. Good nutrition starting at birth, it will give children a good start with your mental and physical health which leads to doing well in school and succeeding in life. The United States Department of Agriculture reported in 2011 that there were 16.7 million kids under 18 that live in households that do not provide a consistent about of nutrition food for them. There were nearly 14 million children being helped by Feeding America and of those 14 million, 3 million were under the age of 5 ("Child Hunger Facts").
One of the leading charities to help fight against hunger in American is the Feeding America charity. Their mission is to feed America 's hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger ("Mission and Values"). Feeding America food banks provide food and groceries to 33,500 food pantries, 4,500 soup kitchens and 3,600 emergency shelters. They also fed 37 million American, 14 million or those children and almost 3 million of them elderly in 2010. From 2006 to 2010, the people receiving help from Feeding American has increased by 27 percent from 4.5 million people a week to 5.7 million a week. 76 percent of the households do not always know where their next meal will come from, 36 percent of
