Flywheel Energy Storage
Flywheel energy storage works by accelerating a rotor (flywheel) to a very high speed and maintaining the energy in the system as rotational energy. The energy is converted back by slowing down the flywheel.Flywheel energy storage system is one form of energy storage devices. It is basically a rechargeable battery. It is used to absorb electric energy from a source, store it as kinetic energy of rotation, and then deliver it to a load at the appropriate time, in the form that meets the load needs. A typical system consists of a flywheel, a motor/generator, and controlled electronics for connection to a larger electric power system

.Flywheels are not affected by temperature changes as are chemical rechargeable batteries, nor do they suffer from memory effect. They are also less potentially damaging to the environment, being made of largely inert or benign material.

Flywheel energy storage systems are widely used in space, hybrid vehicles, military field and power quality. Space station, satellites, aircraft are the main application field in space.

1. INTRODUCTION

Flywheel energy storage (FES) works by accelerating a rotor (flywheel) to a very high speed and maintaining the energy in the system as rotational energy. The energy is converted back by slowing down the flywheel.Flywheel energy storage system is one form of energy storage devices. It is basically a rechargeable battery. Most FES systems use electricity to accelerate and decelerate the flywheel, but devices that directly use mechanical energy are being developed.Advanced FES systems have rotors made of high strength carbon-composite filaments that spin at speeds from 20,000 to over 50,000 rpm in a vacuum enclosure and use magnetic bearings. Such flywheels can come up to speed in a matter of minutes -- much some other forms of energy . A compact energy

Something that is unique about hydropower is that it has the ability to store energy. It starts as the same as a regular power plant, but instead of the turbine spinning forward, it spins backwards. The turbine pumps the water to a pool, like, area that stores the water when needed. If needed, the water is released back to the turbine, spinning it forward starting the generator.…

Hydroelectric energy is a renewable source. It can come from fast moving water or a dam can be created to drop water and increase its speed. Dams raise the height of water on the upstream side of the dam, giving it more gravitational potential energy. The water then drops through pipes in the dam transferring the potential energy to kinetic energy. The water hits turbines which turn generators changing the kinetic energy into electricity.…

San Francisco, January 22, 2014 - The global market for permanent magnets is expected to reach USD 31.18 billion by 2020, according to a new study by Grand View Research, Inc. Growth of global automobile industry is expected to be a key driving factor for permanent magnets market over the forecast period. Permanent magnets are widely used for numerous applications in automobile industry. Various components such as motors, alternators and gearbox require permanent magnets for their mechanism. Grand View Research further observes that the shift in trend towards developing renewable energy generation including solar and wind energy is also expected to drive the market for permanent magnets. Permanent magnets are used in the stator of the wind turbine which is responsible for producing AC electricity.…

Leading the way of electric use is cars. I expect cars to use about 50% electricity in the future. Electric cars today use the energy stored in a battery (or series of batteries) for vehicle propulsion. There are many pros and cons about electric cars. Electric vehicles have a reputation for having faster acceleration but shorter distance range than regular engines. They produce no exhaust whatsoever but will always require long charging times.…

    | The direct current (DC) motor is one of the first machines devised to convert electrical power into mechanical power. Permanent magnet (PM) direct current converts electrical energy into mechanical energy through the interaction of two magnetic fields. One field is produced by a permanent magnet assembly; the other field is produced by an electrical current flowing in the motor windings. These two fields result in a torque which tends to rotate the rotor. As the rotor turns, the current in the windings is commutated to produce a continuous torque output. The stationary electromagnetic field of the motor can also be wire-wound like the armature (called a wound-field motor) or can be made up of permanent magnets (called a permanent magnet motor).…

Only once in a lifetime will a new invention come about to touch every aspect of our lives. An important technology integrated into our society and around theworld is the invention of the Battery. Among many inventions of our modernworld, the battery stands out as an amazing on going development with its effect on almost every portable electric powered device. An electrical battery is acombination of one or more electrochemical cells, used to convert storedchemical energy into electrical energy. The primary, and arguably most noble, intent of the battery is to assist inmankinds pursuit of practicality. Electricity had always fascinated human kindsince our ancestors first witness of lightning. In ancient Greece, Thales observedthat rubbing amber, for which the Greek word is electro, could generate anelectric charge. In 1938 a jar was found just outside of Baghdad, Iraq that may beor could be the first battery.Nowadays battery is used to power, advanced machine, electric appliances andmajority of electronics that are integrated to mankind. Having fulfilled its duty toprovide practicality for human to operate electronics, the battery could be titledas one of the most important inventions ever made. There are currently twotypes of battery, disposable batteries which are designed to be used once anddiscarded when they are worn out,and rechargeable battery which are designedto be recharged and reuse until their ability to store electrical energy decreasedrastically.Normally a battery such as the AA, C or D has two terminals, one is markedpositive and the other one is marked negative. In a battery, electrons collect onthe negative terminal of the battery. The electrons will flow from the negative tothe positive terminal as fast as they can. Normally, you connect some type of loadto the battery using a wire, without any load the battery will wear out veryquickly. This also tends to be dangerous, especially with large batteries. With the…
