Globalisation is a central driving force behind the rapid social, political and economic changes that are reshaping modern society and world order. One of the key elements of globalisation is telecommunication. Telecommunication plays a central role in helping developing countries participate in the global economy.
Telecommunication is pervasive in all aspects of our lives, from the stereo in our living room to the mobile phones we carry every day. These technological innovations that we have are often taken for granted and it is unfeasible for us to imagine how we can function without them. In certain parts of the world these things are unheard of and the people who live there have not experienced the numerous benefits of modern telecommunications.
Developing countries are currently in the midst of a widespread restructuring of their economies. After decades of state control over the economy, import-substitution-led industrialisation, and the proliferation of state-owned enterprises, many Governments are now privatising their state-owned enterprises, increasing the operation of market forces, and opening their economies to global economic forces. The reforms have raised serious questions about the nature and role of the state in guiding national economies.
