Teachers are always looking for ways to help their students learn. Especially in the sciences, there are many labs, activities, and hands on work that teachers can incorporate into their curriculum to help get their point across to the students. Technology has almost become common place in the classrooms, and teachers are now able to use different software programs to assist them in presenting information to their classes. Powerpoint is one such software program that is being used in the classroom as tool to incorporate active learning activities into the curriculum. Powerpoint is an excellent tool for both teachers and students to engage in active learning activities. Powerpoint enables teachers and students to actively create presentations with graphics, charts, diagrams, and pictures in their slideshows to help make often complicated ideas and lessons more manageable and understandable. It is an excellent way for students to actively engage in research, and presentation of information to their class. When students are actively learning, taking an active role in the learning process, they seem to understand the information better, and enjoy the lesson. “PowerPoint was developed for commercial and business purposes, but it has quickly penetrated the scientific and educational circles as well. PowerPoint is a user-friendly package that can be used for the creation of visually clear, dynamic and attention capturing presentations” (Holzl, 1997). I have been using Powerpoint slideshow presentations in my classroom for over five years, both for teaching and as a way for students to be involved in active learning projects.
