How Information Systems Have Benefited Wal­Mart and Amazon Kelvin M. Siemens
Ambrose University College
December 12th, 2014

Corporations such as Wal­Mart and Amazon have been around for quite some time now. Both are leading powers in the market today; Wal­mart in primarily the offline retail industry and Amazon in the online retail industry. Acting as leading examples of successful business; these organizations could not have risen to be one of the central superpowers in the market today if it weren’t for information technologies. In fact I am going as far today that information technologies is what 's allowed their very existence today in the market.
Amazon and Wal­Mart both have remarkable stories and over the years have faced many challenges and have risen to meet them. Their stories are truly an inspiration to organizations and business minded individuals. The purpose of this writing is to share with you two very powerful organizations success stories and how information technology was and is the primary driving force behind their success. We will start with Wal­Mart.
Wal­Mart Inc. is an American multinational retail corporation; operating in 27 countries around the globe they currently have 11,088 locations operating. Wal­Mart is known for it’s relentless pursuit of low consumer prices; their revenue for 2013 summed to a exceptional total of US$ 476.294 Billion and according to the Fortune Global 500 is the largest corporation in the world in terms of revenue. Research states that US$36 million is being spent every hour of every day at Walmart. Founded in 1962 by Sam

Walton; Wal­Mart’s first location was opened in Bentonville, Arkansas. Organizations like Wal­Mart do not turn into these corporate giants over night; their reason for their wild success? Information systems. Wal­Mart’s was able to leverage information systems to an extent that was never seen before in the retail industry.

    As globalization affects every corner of the modern world, those who fail to adopt the free market, liberalized, and interconnected system simply cannot compete on the global market. The war against communism lead by the United States allowed for the spread of capitalist ideas that would allow this global market to flourish. In simple economic terms, a global capitalist system allows for countries to use their comparative advantage in order to most efficiently allocate their resources in the form of imports and exports. Capitalism within a Communist party seems hypocritical enough. Do not expect an influx in communist capitalism however.     There are variety races and colors of people living in this world, and different ethnics and economic situations cause the distance among races. Though there are many people who have overcome the prejudice from history, prejudice and discrimination still exist today. Vincent N. Parrillo wrote an essay, “Causes of Prejudice”, provided the origin and many causes of prejudice and looked at prejudice from a psychological and sociological stand points.
