Many have seen films as a mere entertainment which provides a pleasant feelings to the audiences. There are two sources of enjoyment we can get from a film: First, the pleasant sensation of immediately watching, as this has the sensory stimulation that brought by the visuals and sound effects of a film, as well as makes the audience to follow the narrative plot, the situation and the feelings experienced by the actor. Second, film also provides the audience see through the narrative plot about the significance of life. At first, a film usually touched its audiences through cinematography, mise-en-scenes, sound effects and editing. Secondly, a film used the same form to convey its implied meanings, metaphor, symbolism, and other literatures to trigger its audiences so that they can make their own rational interpretations within it.
We have chosen two of Syamsul Yusof’s films as the examples of film analysis- KL Drift Evolution (2008) and Bohsia: Jangan Pilih Jalan Hitam (2009). Both of these action films featured illegal car and motor race, gangsterisme, drug abuse, prostitution and scuffle. Before we start our analysis, let’s have a brief synopsis on their plots.
First, let’s have a look at KL Drift Evolution. KL Drift Evolution is inspired by a Hollywood action film, Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift. But unlike foreign films, this film can relate to its audiences because of the local elements inside it. This film is settled in Kuala Lumpur, a city full with temptation. The film tells a story about two best friends, Zack and Sham. They are best friend since primarily school and sharing the same passion in drift racing. And each time when Zack was fighting with his girlfriend Fasha, Sham became the middleman between them. In the process, Sham was falling in love with Fasha. Nonetheless, he explained to Fasha and stated that he is unwilling to lose his friendship with Zack, and that he wanted Fasha to stop contacting him. On the other hand, though, drift racing is primarily dominated by male, but this situation did not stop Fasha to be involved in this activity. In one occasion, Zack realized that drug pushers are selling on his racing domain; and that triggered the crisis between him and the drug dealer. Zack confronted the drug dealer and had caused hostility between Zack and the drug pushers’ boss, Joe. So, they decided to have a car race and Zack won the race. However, Joe dissatisfied with the result and murdered one of Zack’s friends. To avoid from more people getting hurt, Zack decided to let the police dealt with Joe. In order to revenge, Joe attempted to hit Zack with his car. But, Sham had managed to save him by sacrificing himself. The film ended with Zack and Fasha sat by Sham’s bedside in the hospital.
The story of Bohsia: Jangan Pilih Jalan Hitam is revolved around two girls: Tasha and Amy, who lack of good education and proper upbringing. Both of them were drawn into the world of illegal racing because of the influence of their boyfriends. Tasha’s boyfriend, Muz like to talk boastingly while Amy’s boyfriend, Acai does not like to be challenged. In addition, Amy has a gambler and drunkard father who often assaults her sexually. Besides, Amy’s ex-boyfriend, Azam who is a pimp always trying to persuade Amy back to his side but actually it is a trap to drag Amy into prostitution. On the other hand, Muz was falling in love with Aisyah who he met in the cyber world. But, he did not know that she is the younger sister of Azam. Eventually, Tasya discovered his betrayal. Due to her disappointment, she took drug and had sex with Acai and his gang. Muz was very angry with Acai action and decided to attack him. A fierce fight happened and ended with Muz arrested by the police and Acai ended up dead. Azam failed to persuade Amy so he kidnapped her and forced her to become a prostitute. Amy escaped and tried to get refuge from her father who drunk. But, he tried to rape Amy. In the scuffle, Amy stabbed...
