INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Philippine Variety Game Shows have always been part of the lives of Filipinos and have constantly been very influential on the values of numerous Filipinos. These variety game shows are entertaining, touching and helping the lives Filipinos by their segments that exhibit humorous acts and taglines, their grand prizes that turn lots of Filipino to millionaires and their other segments that help out many unfortunate Filipino families.

Variety game shows are combination of game show and variety show. According to Wikipedia (2012), “a game show is a type of radio or television program in which members of the public, television personalities or celebrities, sometimes as part of a team, play a game which involves answering questions or solving puzzles usually for money and/or prizes” and “a variety show, also known as variety arts or variety entertainment, is an entertainment made up of a variety of acts (hence the name), especially musical performances and sketch comedy, and normally introduced by a compère (master of ceremonies) or host.”

Presently, Filipinos watch and support different variety game shows that fits their taste and reference. Eat Bulaga, It’s Showtime and Wil Time Bigtime are the three highest rating primetime and noontime variety game shows in the Philippines which showcase diverse manners and styles of attaining supporters.

“Eat Bulaga is a noon-time variety show in the Philippines produced by Television And Production Exponents Inc. (TAPE) and aired by GMA Network also holds the record of being the longest running noontime show in Philippine Television that premiered on July 30, 1979 on RPMN at Broadcast City, Diliman, Quezon City (Wikipedia, 2012).”
