FELDA AS AN ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE BY 2020:
A STRATEGY FOR LUCRATIVE COMMUNITY BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
ABSTRACT
This paper outline strategy for FELDA, an organization that was once in mass poverty eradication programme of crop cultivation in palm oil and rubber, is in the midst of going through the next 50 years. From being social development of settlers, as well as new generation, FELDA needs to transform itself to a bigger role in tandem of its commercial arm was listed in 28th June 2012. This move was to concentrate and in line with the Strategic Reform Initiatives (SRIs) under government Economic Transformation Plan (ETP). FELDA then, is heading towards transformation continue with the people they have grow and nurture while seeking business opportunities for the group, leveraging from the large land bank and over 2 million community associated with it.

INTRODUCTION

The Malaysia Federal Land Development of Authority or FELDA was formed by the Government of Malaysia on 1st July 1956 as land development and resettlement with an objective of poverty eradication through crop cultivation in palm oil and rubber. The initial role of FELDA was to distribute fund to rural areas and monitor the progress and finally became statutory body to eradicate poverty in mass land development. To enable land clearing and settlements are properly implemented and controlled under its helm, the Government has agreed to enact an Act cited as the Land Development Act 1960 (Group Settlement Areas). FELDA continued to develop until 850,000 hectares (2 million acre) until 1990s. In 1990, FELDA has stopped taking new settlers as well as receives government fundss. FELDA needs to manage the 330,000 hectares of palm oil of which without settlers to fund continuous development of the 112,635 participants on a 478,000 hectares of land.
