Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz is a Cuban Revolutionary and Politician, having held the position of Prime Minister of Cuba. He is the illegitimate son of a successful creole sugar plantation owner, and household servant. He has been a strong, successful leader who has managed to hold the support of his people since he came to power in 1959. Fidel Castro was born August 13, 1926 in South Eastern Cuba. He became the leader of Cuba from 1959 up to 2008, after 50 years in power when he stepped down. Fidel Castro was influential on the politics around the world, including on Nelson Mandela from 1953-1955. Castro formed a group known as “The Movement”, which consisted of both a civil and a military committee. Fidel Castro conducted political agitation through a newspaper, “The Accuser”. One of Castro’s goals was to remove opposition to his rule, which he accomplished through executions, imprisonments, and by forcing people to leave the country. The Mariel Boat lift occurred in response to a riot in Havana. Castro opened the port of Mariel to outsiders, and in particular exiled Cubans living in Miami, Florida sailed into port to claim their relatives. One hundred and twenty thousand Cubans left their homeland for United States causing a small crisis when they reaching Miami. Another goal of Fidel Castro was to restore the constitution and bring justice to Cuba and he wanted equal freedom for people in Cuba; later Castro became a socialist and betrayed those ideals, appointing himself dictator. In the photo, we see the victorious and triumphant entry into the Cuban capital, which captures the world’s attention. This picture was taken during the Cuban revolution in April of 1957. Fidel Castro steered the country through communism. He was collectivizing the farms, nationalizing banks and industries.
