Feminism is the theory of the economical, political and social equality of the sexes.   A feminist is not a woman with hairy armpits and a chip on her shoulder but rather, someone who powerfully believes in women’s rights as well as rights for all people and living beings.   “Simply put, feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” (hooks 1)  
The Republican Vice President candidate, Governor Sarah Palin has made claims that she considers herself to be a feminist.   Palin’s feminist status has become a great debate amongst many equal rights activists.   The greatest issue being that Sarah Palin is anti-abortion in all cases except when the mother’s life is in danger, this strongly conflicts with typical feminist ideas as the common concept of feminist theory is that a woman should have reproductive rights.   Another argument is that Sarah Palin is a feminist simply because she is a powerful woman, this is a misconception of the true meaning of feminist.   While Sarah Palin is something to be proud of, the second woman to run on a major United States party ticket, the dispute of her position as a feminist and what she will do for women rages on.
Conservative political activist, Phyllis Shlafly, wrote an article in The San Francisco Gate on September 21, just 23 days after John McCain's announcement that he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate.   Phyllis Shlafly argues that Sarah Palin's nomination for vice presidency is a big step forward for women “but a long backward step for the movement we have been taught to call feminism.” (Schlafly)   Schlafly disputes feminist ideas, stating that feminists should be proud of Sarah Palin's position in politics simply because she is a strong woman.   Schlafly's altercation is that the success of anything with a uterus should be enough for women.
