Female Teens Living in Rural Communities in North Carolina
The aggregate of interest that is being analyzed is female teens living in the state of North Carolina, specifically those living in rural communities. Specific characteristics that can help define this population are age, sex, location, family size, and family income. This particular aggregate includes women varying in age from 12 to 18. This is an important age group on which to concentrate, because, in 2004, 24.8% of the NC population was under the age of 18 (2004). In other words, nearly ¼ of the NC population is of this young age. Varying factors that influence these individuals include family size and family income. In these rural communities, most of these women come from very large families. NC’s top industry is agriculture, which has an enormous influence on the economy. Therefore, in these rural communities, poverty is a very significant factor. For example, in 2003 the U.S. Census Bureau recorded that the average percentage of children ages 5-17 living in poverty stricken families in NC is 16.8%; however, two of the counties with the highest percentages were Robeson County with 28.9% and Halifax County with 28.0% (2003, Small Area Income). Both Robeson County and Halifax County are small, rural, agriculturally based counties. One major factor that influences the amount of poverty in these regions is the influx of migrant farm workers. It is often common that these migrant workers are from large families with low education rates, therefore increasing poverty in these rural areas of NC. Also, these regions have a very high percentage of minorities in general, particularly those of African-American and Hispanic descent. These demographic characteristics define the aggregate and help to identify the given health issues that parallel their living situations.
