Is fashion and clothing art? Does fashion continue to get inspiration from the art world?
It is said that art is the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance .As great French designer Yves Saint Laurent once said, “Fashion is not art, but to dedicate oneself to it you have to be an artist”. I dont agree with him in the point that fashion is not art. In my opinion fashion and clothing is art, because i believe that any creation that comes from imagination is an art expression, I am not going to compare a Pollack painting with making a dress, it is art in a difference sense, but it is still being art. This is a very subjective question open to different answers and reasonings.
First of all, the reasons people sometimes have mixed feelings about fashion as an art, is because fashion is design, and Design pursues aesthetics and funcionality in equal priority. In the other hand, arquitecture can mean the art and science of design and erecting buildings and other physical structures, and as I see it fashion means the art and science of designing and creating masterpieces of clothing. Every time someone dresses up is creating and image, and expression of their feelings and character. For me this is art. The invention of "fashion" as we understand it today in the late nineteenth-century inspired avant-garde artists of the period to create an art form to counter commercial fashion. These artists saw clothing not as a symbol of class distinction but as a force for shaping experience.
Officially fashion isn´t art, but it´s true that they usually go together. Loads of designers have gotten inspiration from painting, sculpture, architecture or photography to create some of their collections.
