Family Violence in Regard to the Local College Student
“One of these days Alice, POW! Straight to the moon!” (The Honeymooners 1955).   When viewing television in the middle parts of the twentieth century, one might have heard this frequented line on a popular television program called The Honeymooners.   This show, and many others like it, provides a picture perfect example that prior to the latter parts of the 20th century, it could be argued that family violence was an unseen norm in American society.   Since the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s, a plethora of research and awareness campaigns have helped to transform family violence into an American cultural taboo.   The sociological view of family violence in the United States has certainly been transformed.   The students of this learning institution, for the most part, should have spent their entire life in an era where domestic violence is considered a completely unacceptable behavior.   The indoctrinated values that tell us it is wrong to abuse a spouse, child, or significant other, are not necessarily in harmony with cultural reality. This brings me to speculate, how prominent is family violence to local college students?   Is it a problem isolated to a certain demographic?   I believe that family violence remains an extremely potent crime, and while it occurs across all demographic boundaries, that the crime is most often committed by white males under the age of 35.
I made the choice to investigate this particular subject matter in an effort to gain insight.   I wanted to know if all the research (and the campaigns) has actually made a difference.   In order to test my hypothesis, I collected and analyzed volunteer surveys from 30 female students of mixed ethnicities, as well as 30 male students of mixed ethnicities.   While collection of such a small sample certainly does not lend accuracy to representing the entire population, I do...
