‘The family has suffered at the expense of career in Singaporean society.’ Is this a fair comment?
The family is a haven in a heartless world, but yet it seems to have started to suffer in the expense of today’s society when people have let other aspects of life take precedence over the family unit. We are leading our daily personal life too often and have seemed to taken our family for granted. Indeed, some family has suffered due to those career-minded adults but it is not fair to conclude that career is solely responsible for the sufferings of the family. Other implications of this matter include education, the members’ personal life and generation gaps. Therefore, by setting the verdict that the family has suffered at the expense of career in Singaporean society is not a fair comment.
In today’s society, many working adults have taken career as their main priority in life and had very much neglected their family. For example, the term “over-time” would flood the office because many have been spending almost three quarter of the day on work, and many businessmen would fly across the country boundary so often that their family would hardly see them. Many often think that these isn’t a big hooha as they have taken their family for granted. Marilyn Monroe once said, “ A career is wonderful, but you can’t curl up with it on a cold night.” Indeed, no matter how great is your career, one cannot turn to his career as a haven when in times of troubles. There is bound to have ups and downs in one’s job. In this highly competitive and heartless society, a shelter where one could mostly trust and turn to for comfort is the family. Yet, many have seemed to forget about this essence. Therefore, I agree that the family has suffered at the expense of career in Singaporean society today to a certain extent as there are other factors that contribute to the desolation of the family such as education.
