According to, in human context, a family (from Latin: familia) is a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity, or co-residence. In most societies it is the principal institution for the socialization of children. Extended from the human "family unit" by biological-cultural affinity, marriage, economy, culture, tradition, honour, and friendship are concepts of family that are physical and metaphorical, or that grow increasingly inclusive extending to community, village, city, region, nationhood, global village and humanism. A family can be defined as many things but my definition of a family is the basic household unit which provides a person’s central relationship, nurture and support. There are many different types of families such as a nuclear family, an extended family, a single parent family and so much more. Many of these family types exist in the family today but unfortunately these families are being denatured every day due to the social problems. But with the power of God the families of the Bahamas can overcome their troubles.

The member of the couple to whom the child is not biologically related is the stepparent, specifically the stepmother or stepfather. If both members of the couple have prior children, the children are stepbrothers and stepsisters to one another. Any subsequent child born to the couple becomes the half-sister or half-brother of the prior children from previous relations. Nuclear family is a term used to define a family group consisting of one or more children living with two parents who are married to one another mostly and are each biological or adoptive parents to all children in the family. The extended family is a family that includes in one household grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins, and or a nuclear family all living together. In other words, several generations that lives together within a single household. A single parent family is a family that consist of one parent and who has most of the day to day responsibilities in the raising of the child or children, which would categorize them as the dominant caregiver. The dominant caregiver is the parent in whom the children have residency with majority of the time; if the parents are separated or divorced children live with their custodial parent and have visitation with their noncustodial parent. A sibling family consists of an older or older siblings and smaller siblings. The eldest sibling would be the caregiver of the family and would be in charge of the younger siblings in the household.
