Mama, the narrator of Alice Walker’s story, “Everyday Use,” is a strong, loving mother who is sometimes threatened and burdened by her daughters, Dee and Maggie. Gentle and stern, her inner monologue offers us a glimpse of the limits of a mother’s unconditional love. Mama is brutally honest and often critical in her assessment of both Dee and Maggie. She harshly describes shy, withering Maggie’s limitations, and Dee provokes an even more pointed evaluation. Mama resents the education, sophistication, and air of superiority that Dee has acquired over the years. Mama fantasizes about reuniting with Dee on a television talk show and about Dee expressing gratitude to Mama for all Mama has done for her. This brief fantasy reveals the distance between the two and how under appreciated Mama feels. Despite this brief daydream, Mama remains a practical woman with few illusions about how things are.…

In Alice Walker’s short story, “Everyday Use”, we see 3 variations of characterization. The most prominent characterization is of Mama. She is described as a masculine woman, rejecting the traditional role of a female. Throughout the story you can see what Mamas views on heritage and tradition are. Walker’s purpose in writing this story is to creatively give a visual on how important family relationships are, and how the different between members brought to light over time can create conflict.…

“Students and teachers should be in favor of later school start time because it results in increased grades, more hours of sleep, and fewer students sleeping in class.” Students should be given a chance to get enough sleep and it may result in higher grades in school and teachers will have more energy to teach student the fundamentals of school better. This method of teaching kids started in 2002 when school boards had the idea starting school at a later time. So students can get a better experience at school…

She also started noticing how her mother does not have time for herself and only time for taking care of the house. “Gradually, I began to notice that never seemed to have a moment for herself.” She feels sorry for her mother, that she does not have time for herself that she is always busy taking care of the chores at the house without her husband helping her. In other hand, she also starts noticing that her father who does all the manly chores of the house always time left for his hobbies. ‘I realized that my father, who took care of all the “manly” household chores— chopping wood, killing mice, still had time for a…

Brave New World warns of the dangers of giving the state control over new and powerful technologies. One illustration of this theme is the rigid control of reproduction through technological and medical intervention, including the surgical removal of ovaries, the Bokanovsky Process, and hypnopaedic conditioning. Another is the creation of complicated entertainment machines that generate both harmless leisure and the high levels of consumption and production that are the basis of the World State’s stability. Soma is a third example of the kind of medical, biological, and psychological technologies that Brave New World criticizes most sharply.…

    Character Essay

The character I have chosen from Alice Walker's novel, 'Everyday Use,' is Mama. Mama is a single parent raising two daughters. Mama describes herself as a “large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands. She proudly tells of her ability to kill and clean hogs as “mercilessly” as any man. I believe these skills were acquired out of sheer survival and necessity. Mama starts the story recalling the dreams she often has in which she and Dee reunite on a television talk show. In this dream she has described herself almost as if it is the woman that she wished she was for example she states she is “a hundred pounds lighter, her skin like an uncooked barley pancake.” Although she says the way she looks in the dream is the way her daughter would want her to be, I think she longs for that as well.…

“Take away my good name, take away my life” This is a quote that I’m sure everyone in this room can probably relate to. We all remember our high school days, we wanted everyone to know our name. We wanted popularity and our reputation meant the world to us. What we do and how we act reflects directly on our name. For Shea Simmons what happened to her name was not her fault. Shea spent countless hours practicing and working on Mock Trial, working towards getting the scholarship from the Metropolitan Bar Foundation. Everything seemed perfect and at the end of the finals-they had won! However, all that came crashing down a few days later. Because of one childish blog post, a coach with a thirst for winning, and a jealous teenager Shea’s dreams…
