Historical Event Depicted: This novel illustrates the Battle of Gettysburg, often known as the turning point of the great American Civil War. Southern slave-holding states, known as the Confederate States of America, fight the war with loyal Union states for secession. The Battle of Gettysburg is where Union Major General George Gordon Meade’s Army of the Potomac defeats Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, putting an end to Lee’s invasion of the North.…
In the 1970s many public schools in Ohio, Maine, New York, Idaho, and Oklahoma were required to ban the book from their required reading list after receiving numerous complaints. In the 1980s, several schools in New Hampshire and Washington were also challenged and brought to the school board, but the attempt unsuccessful in banning the book. The latest challenge was in 2000, parents with children in a California public school district filed complaints with the school board, calling the book “garbage”, however, the department of education believed that the book was a great learning resource and were not required to ban the book. The negativity stemmed from the racist remarks, violence, sexual remarks, unsavory themes, and foul language. (L.A. Times) (ALA,…
The book teaches about dreams and friendships. It helps envision what it was really like in the 1930's. It shouldn't be banned anywhere. It should instead be taught and understood. By banning the book, students aren't getting an idea of the real history. The book would make students think. It teaches obstacles that everyone must face at some point in their life-time. It should be taught with the themes and language. The book insults women and African-Americans. But it’s not intended to hit specific people. People have to face…
All Information i have gotten about this book being banned all support the idea of this book being banned for a main character smoking and some different outlook on religion. Personally i think this is a horrible and no good reason to ban a book from schools where children can sit down and enjoy a book meant to show them an adventure. My personal opinion is that the only time a book should be taken away from people is if the…
Have you ever wondered what books are challenged or banned. “Of Mice and Men”is the book that I could see has had a lot of controversy by high school parents over the last couple of years. The book is banned and challenged in a lot of high schools across America. The reasons for the banning of this book is racism, profanities, and adult themes. For me, it's a high schooler's book, and it is clear that “of Mice and Men” should not be banned.…
A banned/challenged book is material that has been removed because people believe that it is too inappropriate to read. Especially in schools. The reason books are challenged or even banned is that the topics the book covers are sensitive for people to handle. Such as racial themes, profanity, and violence. The novel The Catcher in the Rye would be challenged because it showed a child going through an adult life with vulgar language, sexual references, and underage drinking. After all the reasons why the novel got challenged I still believe that is should not be.…
This book was banned due to racial tensions and so called “inappropriate content”. In 1960, school administrators fired an Ohio teacher for assigning the novel to an 11th grade student. The administration claimed the book was anti-white and more predominant white communities fought to have it banned completely. A library banned the novel for a so called violation of codes. The library claimed it had excessive sex scenes, violence ,and extreme foul…
It was banned from Montour High School in 1976. it was banned because it has explicit sex scenes, and graphic violence. The main character is also an illegitimate son of a king. These parts of the book are what the parents of the students at Montour High thought…
War can change a person’s perspective and gain one’s maturity. Not only let a person to be more considerate for others, but also increase a person’s courage. Throughout the Fallen Angels, the war changes the soldiers a lot. For example, the innocent young soldiers enter the war, it quickly changes them and forces them to develop into men. The relationship between the squad members have also changed and make their friendship even more strongly bonded. In addition, Perry’s point of view for the war has also changed.…
I believe that people should be able to choose what they read, and that other people shouldn’t hold that right from them. In the article we all read on Laurie Halse Anderson, she says that adults just have to suck it up sometimes. I support reasonable censorship, such as not letting little kids read things with graphic sexual content or strong language, but nothing really heavy for older kids, like not letting them read books with violence or with controversial topics in them. Books such as the Harry Potter series shouldn’t be banned just because they have magic and witchcraft in them, but books like 50 Shades of Gray should definitely be. I think it’s more reasonable for the readers to be told that certain books contain violence, sexual content,…
Books all over America are in danger. Books, objects that allow imagination and the expansion of the mind and the world around one, are often times subject to criticism and even bannings when any one person does not like the content. Books bannings should not be done whatsoever, let alone become a semi-common practice. Of course, bannings only occur after careful consideration. Or do they? Censorship is a growing problem in America, as parents and other authority figures ban various types of books in their community when content is too “edgy” or “age inappropriate”, and these are often gone through without the book so much as being opened. However, in all reality, what might be “wrong” for one child may be just right for another. Are book…
One reason this book is banned from many schools is because the plot involves rape. A girl accuses an African American man of taking advantage of her when he didn’t. Rape happens all of the time and you can’t keep children away from learning it. If they don’t know that stuff like that happens in real life,…
At first glance, the debate over banning books appears unimportant. Nevertheless, this debate has divided our nation into those who favor censoring books to protect their impressionable adolescents, and those who argue that education should be open for everybody without interference from the government in restricting the publishing and accessing of these books.…
What do the books Fifty Shades of Grey, Animal Farm and Tropic of Cancer? They are all banned in different countries because of their content. Books like these should be pulled from shelves. A child could have walked away with a book with that make them depressed about issues or confused about different things they explain in the book. Some people think certain books should not be banned about the material, content and issues because this could teach the youth about situations and topics they give them a better understanding. But these types of lessons should be taught at an older age and when they are mature enough for it. Certain books should be banned because of inappropriate material and issues youth don’t understand.…
If a book should be banned or is not right for the age group, teens and children can get the wrong idea about a topic, think something is okay when it is not, and can also make them more aware about real like issues. Books that are read by people not old enough for them may have impacts on the readers. The readers can get the wrong idea about topics. Some books are very one sided, especially books about religions, bullying, and current events.…
