Fahrenheit 451
Studies show that only two out of every ten households have any books within the home that are actually read. With technology improving there are many ways to prove that our world is becoming less intelligent every minute, every hour, and every day. Ray Bradbury displays characteristics of what the universe will become in the near future if this continues. Although the citizens of Fahrenheit 451 believe books are a corruption to society, nevertheless Ray Bradbury conveys that books are a symbol of knowledge, because if we lose the power of knowledge we will lose the ability to progress and think for ourselves The citizens of Fahrenheit 451 believe knowledge will destroy their society. They also fear the knowledge that will evolve from books. The thought of new ideas intimidate the people. Beatty says to Montag when visiting his home, “A book is a loaded gun in the house next door” (Bradbury 58). Beatty’s thoughts emphasize how the government is controlling the society’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Knowledge is hated so much to where it is against the law to even own a book. Clarisse asks Montag, “Do you ever read the books you burn?’ Montag answers, ‘That’s illegal!’” (Bradbury 6). The government controls every aspect of the citizens’ lives therefore discouraging them to think for themselves and contributes to training its people to believe that books are a negative influence. Faber tells Montag while discussing the importance of books “… books are hated and feared? They show the pores in the face of life” (Bradbury 83). Faber’s thoughts and beliefs rebel against the ordinary. The society thinks that burning the books will resolve the issue of why people should not read them. In reality burning the books brings up more questions about the content of books, therefore causing the citizens of Fahrenheit 451 to finally begin thinking and questioning.
