Factors Behind Ted Bundy's Crimes

Ever since the world began, humans have been known to act according to their own will without thinking deeply of the consequences of their actions. Adam and Eve, the first two humans ever created in this world have a son who killed his brother with his own bare hands and it was recorded as the first crime in human history. Following his footsteps, it has been known for a long time that there are countless cases of brutal crimes. Now the question that has been asked over and over again is what are the reasons behind these brutal crimes? In the case of Ted Bundy, one of America’s most notorious serial killers, his frantic addiction to pornography since childhood, his early childhood experience of violence and his Anti-Social Personality Disorder (ASPD) are the reasons behind his brutal crimes.

In Bundy’s case, Sullivan (2009) found that one of the reasons behind his brutal crimes is his unquenchable addiction to pornography. He started viewing violent pornography at an early age and he became so obsessed with women’s bodies. When it reached to a point where viewing is not enough, he started having interests in performing violent sexual acts like raping young women. He believed that pornography took control of his life and created his desire for sex. While raping, he loses his sanity, and his sense of reasoning only kicked in after raping them so he killed the victims for his own pleasure, as well as to leave no witness (Polyakov, 2012). According to Douglas (1996), the most crucial factor in the development of serial rapists and killers is the role of fantasy. When one watches too much pornography, it may cause him to act out what he has seen to bring his fantasy into reality. Morgan (1977) states that pornography is the theory and rape is the practice. Pornography ignites violence in certain individuals, especially the mentally disturbed people who would turn aggressive toward women.
