CHAPTER I

Introduction
The extent of student’s learning in academics may be determined by the grades a student earns for a period of learning has been done. It is believed that a grade is a primary indicator of such learning. If a learner earns high grades it is concluded that they may also have learned a lot while low grades indicate lesser learning. However, many experiences and studies found out that there are also several factors that would account for the grades. No single factor can be definitely pointed out as predicting grades. It has been an interplay of so many factors – gender, daily allowance, social status, time and interest. In fact, almost all of existing environmental and personal factors are a variable of academic performance. However, at this point in time, the researchers would like to investigate the possible relationship of study habits and the factors affecting it to the academic achievement of under graduate education students of Saint Joseph College of Canlaon. The investigations of this area thus become a real and compelling motivation for the researchers to conduct this study. Background of the Study

Learning is a lifetime process. Continues learning equips you as a student with a larger tapestry of knowledge, a broader understanding of facts, a larger repository of wisdom, and a better insight on life that will make better individual responsible and upright human beings. On process of learning, students or learner is the center of education. Studying their different as pects as a student and their ways on attaining such goal to be exemplatory

Statement of the Problem
The study aims to determine the factors that affect the academic performance of the third year Education Students of Saint Joseph College of Canlaon. SY. 2010-2011
Specifically, this study aims to accomplish the following objectives. A. To determine the effects of the following Variables to the academic performance of the third year Education Students of SJCC. 1. Study behavior

2.1 proper study behavior
2.2 poor study behavior
2. Economic status
3. Gender Civil status
4. Parent’s and teacher’s motivation
B. To determine how the stated variables affect the academic performance of the third year Education students of SJCC

Hypothesis
In view of the proceeding problem the following hypothesis were made advance 1. Parents’ and teachers’ motivation has a great influence on the student’s performance. 2. There is a significant relationship between the economic status and the study behavior to the academic performance of the students. 3. The dependent and independent variables are affecting the academic performance of the students. Significance of the study

The study aims to determine the factors affecting the academic performance of the third year Education students of SJCC. 2010-2011 The results of the study will be significant to the school’s improvement regarding the academic performance of the students, to the parents, to the entire faculty, to the administration and to all future researchers. This will be noteworthy for the following specific reasons: * Students - It will help address their academic problems and find ways on improving their study behaviors as well as their academic performance. * Parents-it will make them aware on the real needs of their children in terms of financial and emotional support. * Teachers-It will provide them insights on the problems possibly faced by their students and thus, giving them ideas on how to respond to such needs with understanding. It also can help the teacher to be more prepared for the coming situations. * Administration-it will make them aware on how serious is the problem of the students regarding their academic performance because of the said variables, so they would come up with a more flexible and attainable programs that will answer the needs of the students.
