World’s Largest Social Networking Service: Facebook
Facebook Kyujin Park Facebook is the world’s largest social networking service that helps people communicate more efficiently with their friends, family, and coworkers. In 2012, according to The New York Times, Facebook has more than 800 million active users around the world. The public favours Facebook as a way to “keep in touch with friends;” however, people, especially the younger generations, have become strongly attached to Facebook without realizing its negative effects. In fact, people who advocate the use of the social network are putting themselves in jeopardy. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard University and the site that is only for college students grew into the world’s largest network that can be connected to from anywhere in the world. On Facebook, users can share their feelings, find their friends, send messages, play games, write on their walls, upload pictures and videos, comment on friend’s pictures, update their profile, and make new friends. This quick texting and sharing of information captivates millions of people and leads people to believe that Facebook is a friendly network where people meet new friends. However, due to its immeasurable size, Facebook creates many serious issues in society. The biggest problem for Facebook users is a Facebook addiction. According to the statics from DigitalBuzzBlog, 48% of users ages 18 to 34 check their Facebook account right when they wake up and about 28% of them check their Facebook account on their smart phones before even getting out of bed. Since the Facebook users ages under 34 is approximately 50% of the entire Facebook users, it shows how many people are addicted to Facebook. A Facebook addiction which results in users spending more time on Facebook may bring health related problems.
