Topic: Extraterrestrial life: Our solar system and beyond
Human beings have been fascinated with the idea of life beyond the stars since the beginnings of recorded history. Our very first recorded civilization, Sumerian, recorded that their “Gods” were actually extraterrestrials and that the Sumerians themselves were created by this race of beings. This was recorded fact that was public knowledge to these people and it was not the only time in history that we’ve seen records of a group of people’s fascination with extraterrestrial life. We see it in the Mayan, Aztec, Egyptian, Roman, Grecko, and Ancient Asian cultures. Fast forward to modern times and our culture has been fascinated with science fiction shows such as Star Trek, Star Wars, and countless Hollywood movies that depict extraterrestrial life out there in the universe. These movies and shows mostly depict intelligent and complex life forms such as ourselves, but in present day reality, we are more likely to find trace life forms such as bacteria and microbes, especially in our own solar system. One cannot exactly define when the search for extraterrestrial life actually began scientifically, but the idea and the possibility has been around for quite some time. What can be recorded is when the idea of extraterrestrial life forms came into full view of the public. On October 30, 1938, radio listeners were shocked when they heard “news reports” coming over the radio talking about aliens from Mars viciously attacking the Earth and killing millions of people. The way that this program was broadcasted, people though that it was real. Some people fled their homes while others packed up the cars and fled to the country. What listeners didn’t know until after it was over was that they were actually listening to an adaptation of H.G. Wells book War of the Worlds.
